Brown vs White Rice For you that home cook, which do you think is better? Brown rice or white rice? I have heard white is easier on their tummy. Any one with knowledge about this? Thanks! |
I home cook and I've used white rice in a pinch before. My recipes from Dr R call for brown rice but I'm not sure why. I will be following this thread to see what the difference is. I will say that jada had a complete blood panel done last week due to a tummy issue she was having. All of her blood work results were very good. |

Brown rice is less processed. Does it mean more nutrients and fiber? It depends on one's perspective. I tend to think of a dog's diet as a whole. So if the dog is eating other sources of fiber then I don't care if the carbohydrate source in the diet contains fiber. It is for this reason that I follow a veterinary nutritionist's advice who has looked at the entire diet. Some people care about the amount of fiber they can get from rice (or other grains) as if it is the only way in the world anyone can get fiber. Vegetables can provide plenty of fiber. I think brown rice is harder on a dog w/ a history of GI issues. |
I don't us either one. I use Quinoa or barley, and I cook these my home made chicken broth. You can also use sodium free chicken broth. I don't use any grains for my dogs . My preference. I'm just stating the differences between white and brown. Veggies are better for fiber. |
Quinoa is a complete protein considered a super food. Which I eat. Especially when on a 3 day hike because its light. But I still don't give to my dogs. Not right or wrong just my preference. |
I have read and been told brown rice is harder to digest. When Callie has had tummy issues in the past my vet has always recommended white rice and chicken and was specific to white rice. |
I don't eat grains at all and currently neither do my dogs. But rice is brought into dog diets when home cooking for carbohydrate. If you use something else other proteins are usually cut back. |

When I was homecooking, I much preferred white rice vs brown rice bc of how a dog's digestive system works to process carbs, as compared to ours....white is easier/simpler to digest for dogs. Remember, dogs don't have amylase in their saliva like we do... |

Rhonda, as you know I home-cook for Harry...we don't have your sweet potato issues - but we DO have issues with brown rice, it seems to be waaaay too harsh on his little (!!!) tummy - really upsets it and makes him very loose. No problems at all with white rice, though :) He gets loads of fibre from his many veggies...hope all's well with you all! :) xxx |
