Question about antibiotics before dental. My boy is in need of a cleaning. The vet yesterday said their price includes antibiotics before and after the procedure. My question: Are antibiotics normally given because he hasn't been given them before when he had this done? The clean teeth and fresh breath don't seem to last long either. I took him to a new vet yesterday so I'm just trying to understand why the same procedure wasn't followed before. Thank you:) |

Thanks. Now I wonder why that was never done before and if it was done properly. Could that be the reason that the tarter and bad breath returned so quickly? Less than 6 months later they told me it should be done again. BTW, the cost for the cleaning at that particular office was $85. The fee at the new vet is $175 excluding any extractions that my happen. |

ANTIBIOTICS: Antibiotics are often given before, and then after the dental cleaning (and possible extractions) to eliminate any bacteria present and avoid spreading bacteria into the blood during dental cleaning. In many severe infections, antibiotics will be prescribed for several days and then an appointment is scheduled for a recheck. Be SURE to continue antibiotics until instructed not to do so! Use the entire contents of any prescribed medications before stopping. Oral medications are often prescribed, depending upon the severity of infection. This is not routinely needed in human dentistry because we don’t let our teeth get that bad before seeking professional help. |
Thank you. Still doesn't make sense to me that when his teeth were cleaned before that nothing was given before or after. I don't doubt that they are needed. |
I need to schedule an appt. for my 3 1/2 year old 1st cleaning. He had blood work done already at a cost of $75. That gave him a clean bill of health so that they don't run into any unexpected issues. The estimate for the cleaning is for $260 - $640. He should be at the low end. That includes anesthesia, the cleaning and care. The high end includes x-rays, extractions, etc. When your dog has his teeth done before, did they put him under anesthesia? |
Yes they did use anesthesia. He was there at 7:30 am and they called around 2 pm to tell me he was done. |
Antibiotics are used on a case by case basis. Our vet hasn't used them on our dogs. |
I just took both of mine in today for their annuals. One needed a dental and the other did not. Last time he got a dental, he needed antibiotics before and after. This time, the vet did not think it would be necessary. So I concur with 107barney that it is on a case by case basis. |
Thanks. That's what I wanted to know, if it was standard protocol. :) |
