Possible Reaction to Sentinel Heartworm Med Sunday evening, I gave Pepper Jack his first heart worm medication. I gave him the Sentinel Heart worm/Flea Control pill as recommended by my Vet. Vet said he was too little for the topical that I give Lacey. Yesterday morning, he had very soft stools, but not liquid. I fed him his usual RC Yorkshire Terrier puppy food, put him in his playpen and left for work. When I got home he had vomited up his breakfast. I got him out of the playpen to clean it up and he was playing with his toys and seemed fine. Then he ran to his puppy pad and had diarrhea. He vomited a little bile right after that and laid down and went to sleep. About 5 hours later he was up and playing and begging for food. I gave him some chicken breast. He kept that down. I gave him a small amount of chicken breast again about 3 hours later. He kept that down all night and woke up this morning running and playing with Lacey as normal. He is drinking plenty of water and I also gave him a dab of NutraCal last night and this morning. For breakfast, more chicken breast which he has kept down for an hour so far. I'm scared to feed him anything else as I don't know what triggered this. Could it be the Sentinel? Other than that, he had a few Nature's Variety freeze dried treats before bedtime, but he's had those before. He's been eating the Royal Canin for 5 weeks now, so surely it's not that. |
Yes, the flea/tick/heart worm pill can do this. Zoey vomited two months in a row after giving her this med. my vet put her on Heart Guard and a topical flea med. I don't use the flea med - it makes her hair oily. |
I use Sentinel with no issues, though each pup is different. Question, did you give the pill with food? Sentinel can cause tummy upset if given on an empty stomach. |

I gave it to him about 20 minutes after his dinner. He also had 3 or 4 treats about 30 minutes afterwards. He didn't vomit up his dinner. He didn't start vomiting until the next morning after breakfast. He did start with the very soft poop as soon as he woke up though. He's had soft poop before when he got into Lacey's Orijen, but that wasn't the case this time. |

I have 3 tiny adults that weigh less than 2.0 lbs- 2.5 lbs....I use Revolution on these three tiny dogs and have never had an issue.....they have a dosage of Revolution that is appropriate for puppies 8 weeks old....I love Sentinel, I used it until I acquired all the dogs I have now.... but I just can not afford to give it to all my dogs. An option for you could be the Revolution until you get some more size/weight/age on your baby, then return to Sentinel if you want. I really like Revolution, for everything it targets in dogs, and have never had any issues with it either. |
Thanks! Pepper Jack weighs 3.5 lbs right now. Lacey gets Advantage Multi which is expensive to me and it also has some affect on Lacey. She doesn't act like herself the day after I apply it, but she hasn't got sick like Pepper. I haven't seen Revolution at my vet, but will ask when I take him back for his last vaccination this weekend. |
