Food Portion??? Hello All, My boy will be 1yr next week and he has always been a picky eater. From day 1 I could not get him to get dry food. I've been buying high quality like Instinct and Wellness. I would feed him Merrick wet food with crush in kibble of wellness and he would eat it very late like 2pm and then like 9pm. Whenever I would start to prepare it for him (take out of fridge and nuke it a bit) he would run and hide. Then eventually eat but then sometimes before he eat it he would throw up bile, obviously from having an empty stomach. So I asked the vet if I can go down in brand of food and she said to try Purina One and so I bought him a bag of Purina One Smartblend dry food. The first day he ate the whole serving, but then now I have been measuring and he only eats about 1/4 cup of food per day, when I think the recommended is 1/2 cup. He is a tiny yorkie as he only weighs 3 1/5 lbs. Is this enough food he's been eating or should I go back to giving him wet food and then perhaps give Purina One in the evening? What portion's are you guys feeding for a dog of similat size? Thanks. |
I would find it very hard to trust Purina since they were the owners of the waggin train chicken jerky that was linked to hundreds of dogs deaths. Royal Canin seems to be a great food for picky eaters. I have heard of many picky eaters loving it including mine. |
Which king od Royal Canin dry? and which type for adults etc. Lastly, what portion do you give. |

Sophie doesn't eat much either I start with 1/4 cup a day and if she finishes it I give a bit more most days she doesn't finish it though. I've just started to change foods though and she seems to love her new food eats it all in minutes at eat feeding. It's called sky's the limit comes frozen in muffins or you can buy the mix and make it fresh |
Thanks My boy doesn't eat much either of the dry food. How much does your Sophie weigh and how Olds is she? |
Sophie is seven months now and 2.5 pounds. I use to worry all the time and even weigh her once a week to make sure she was gaining and not losing weight and now I realize she doesn't require a lot of food |
She also seems tiny like my guy. Just curious have you asked your Vet about her size and eating portion. |
Yes and he said she's doing well and he doesn't think she will get any bigger so to be careful not to over do treats or food because her frame is so small |
Makes sense. You have a good vet. |
Yes we do |

I'm sure she will still put on a few ounces but he was more concerned that she doesn't gain even a pound she is very tiny and needs a little more meat on her bones but even half a pound would do that. |
Hi Britster, so Jackson eats 1/2 cup of dry food and you also give him wet food. How much serving of wet food does he get? |
