Orthopedic Surgeons in New England? My 6 year old yorkie was seen by an orthopedic vet today. Long story short, he has Grade 4 Medial Luxating Patella in both back legs. He said the bone is so worn down he wouldn't be able to do the "usual" surgery he does of making the groove deeper for the patella and said that I may want to consider total knee replacement surgery for both knees. It looks like he also has osteoarthritis in both knees. 1. Does anyone know anyone in Mass or Southern NH that does this type of surgery? 2. How much does it cost? Kind of confused about the whole thing. |
About $3,000 I would go to cape cod vets and see dr Ed Kochin or go see any of the ortho surgeons at Angell in Boston. |
Also, I doubt that they'll so a "knee replacement" My dog had a grade IV - fixed at age 2 and doing great since and she's 14 now. Recently had surgery on my make with cape cod and satisfied with outcome and love the dr. |
Is that $3,000 for each knee or both? Just trying to figure out if I have to rob a bank to get the money together. |
Where I live that would be $3K for each knee well actually closer to $4K for TPLO surgery. Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteomy. I don't know what the costs are for *total* knee replacement as I don't know what that is. |
Did your dog have the surgery that made the groove deeper? The vet I saw today said, he wouldn't do it cause the bone is almost flat and the knees are actually on the outer side of the leg. Looks like he was born with it. Occasionally, he would do the bunny hop thing, but the last 6 weeks his when trying to jump up on the couch his back legs just gave out completely and he was walking on his front 2 legs only! (happened 3x) So scary, I'm kinda freaking out. |

No that is a different kind of surgery to TPLO. There are many different kinds of repair for Medial Luxating Patella, some dependent upon ACL or CCL tears. I am at work, I will try to find the article that talks about the different surgeries when I get home. I would definitely get a second opinion from another ortho vet and in particular where 107Barney recommended. She is in the States and knows your area and some of the specialists with in it. |
Thanks gemy - he does not have the torn ligaments, that I know for sure. I look forward to seeing the article you're talking about. I'm Google-ing the crap out of this subject, but I figured a little help from other yorkie parents would help me calm down a bit. This dog is not just a dog, he is my angel and I love him. I'm going to def try and find one who will do it. I'm going to make some phone calls in the next few days and do a ton of searching on the internet.... problem is, I tend to freak myself out with all the info out there. |

Thx for the info. The Cape is a bit far for me. Boston is only about 40 minutes away, so I'll def give them a call and get a second opinion. |
Found a surgeon in Brentwood, NH. Dr. Lampson at VESH. He's going in on Feb. 16 for surgery. Just got my list of things to do to get Sully' s post op area ready for this 12 weeks he'll be on cage rest. He just took his first doze of rimadyl for the pain/inflammation and is taking a nap. I think he's stoned. |

Let us know how Sully does - maybe start a new thread in "sick and injured" so more people will follow! |
Sully has been taking rimadyl for a week now and MAN what a difference! He's not limping, he's going up and down the stairs again. It's like night and day. Surgery is next Monday. |
I started a new thread in Sick and Injured as you suggested, titled "Prayers for Sully". Looking for prayers and positive thoughts. I'm so anxious. Just found out he'll have to spend the night too. He's never been away from us for the night. I'm a mess. |
