2 year old Yorkie/Chi has Cataracts What is the success rate of Cataract surgery? We take him to the specialist next week so he can give us a consultation on how far along the cataracts are and if he would benefit with surgery... Anyone experience the same thing? What were your options and if you had surgery what was the success rate and vision returning? Thanks everyone...we are really devastated as he isn't even 2 yet... |
I am truly sorry that your baby has this condition. I know there have been great strides in cataract surgery since my dog had them 20 years ago. Back then the surgery only gave him one more year before he went blind. He did well as a blind boy for many years. He was 5 when he was dx'ed. Wishing you much success in the treatment. Please let us know what the vet says can be done. |
I had a lens transplant in both eyes two years ago and is was wonderful. Maybe they have transplants for dogs now. |
No direct experience with cataracts but I had a poodle with glaucoma so we spent many hours over the years in the waiting room of the eye specialist and met many dogs that had - or were preparing to have - cataract surgery. The specialist we were seeing did a lot of that particular surgery and had a very good success rate. For a young dog like yours, I would have the surgery if possible. Our dog eventually went blind and did okay but she was about 13 then. Your dog has a long life ahead, so I would preserve the eyesight if possible! |
Cataracts Sent you a PM, we have been through this. It is a successful surgery :-) |
Thankyou everyone for your thoughts and advice..We are confident that surgery will be the way to go..We just noticed it after Christmas so it is very early on....We have already had a regiment of drops several times a day and meds 2-3 times day since he scratched his cornea..so I am ready and willing to look after him post op..Plus I am a stay at home Mom also... He's to hearing good news next Monday... |
Cataracts Praying for a successful visit Monday. If the cataract is immature, that is positive news for a successful surgery. Sorry about the scratched cornea and hope he is ok now. Through this painful misfortune, you now have experience of the eye drop regimen and it is good that you have the time available for post op care :-) Good Luck! |
eye drops for cataracts in pets Have you ever tried eye drops for cataracts for dogs?? Vets and human eye surgeons use surgery as a cash cow, google them, just make sure you get genuine eye drops. |
