Dry Skin! My newest addition, Bambi, happened to come home with some very dry skin. I was hoping it was because the breeder used a strong shampoo or maybe just bathed to often, but she scratches her belly constantly. She actually has scabs right above her girly parts where she has been scratching. I haven't seen mites or anything, and I have been putting some lotion on her belly, and am now considering putting a bandaid or something over the scabs. Has anyone had this issue? Any suggestions? It could be her diet as well, of course, she is currently eating Royal Canin, which both the pups seem to love. She also eats cottage cheese occasionally. Thanks in advanced :) |
Might want to have the vet do a skin scaping to r/o mites or bacterial infection. Of course, it could also be the weather. I know my skin gets dry in the winter. Also, it could be an allergic reaction to her food (like you said) or her shampoo, or any number of things. Would check with the vet to be sure, plus even if it is just dry skin, if she is scratching to the point of scabs, she could get a secondary skin infection. Try putting her in a shirt or onesy or PJ's. That will help with the scratching. I would stay away from bandaids as they can be irritating to the skin, too. |
If she has scabs/has broken skin, then I'd get her to the vet asap bc she may have pyoderma (staph intermidius infection), for which you'd need a prescription. The vet would need to do a quick skin scraping to get a sample. |
If it's not any infection, could be her skin is sensitive to hard water. Our old place didn't have a softener and Uni scratched like crazy. The new house we have a softener and it's like night and day. |
