Yorkie Sensitive Stomach/GI Problems Looking for some advice from other Yorkie moms and dads who have fur babies with sensitive tummies. Teddy is 3 years old and has been struggling with tummy problems for about 2 years. A little background about Teddy's issues: he had no problems with foods or treats until 2 summers ago when he got ahold of some sugar free candy that contained xylitol. We almost lost him because of the xylitol toxicity. After this occurred his stomach was never the same, about 3 times a month he would get bloody stools that where almost completely mucous. His stomach was very loud, always rumbling, and he would vomit bile very once in awhile as well. After taking him to a vet and running multiple tests, including bloodwork the vet recommended Purina Vet Diet EN food. This seemed to fix the problem for about a month until he returned to his old way with tummy problems. The only thing that stopped them completely is adding probiotics to his food. Since he's regular again due to the probiotics(purina fortiflora), I want to switch his food to a more nutritious dry food, Since the purina vet diets never did anything for his tummy issues and the fact that they have a horrible ingredient list. Can anyone suggest any good dry foods that they have success with and helped with recurring diarrhea and occasional bile vomiting? I currently am trying out Merrick Grain Free Limited Ingredient Salmon and Sweet Potato dry food but its only been one day so far. |
Oh gosh, this is a tough one bc you never know which food could cause a reaction in a tummy sensitive kiddo. The kibbles I recommend are Natures Logic, Solid Gold, Nature's Variety, Acana...to name a few... |
We have had good luck with a couple of things but plain dry food isn't one of them. The best food for tummy issue has been canned Hills ID. When all is going well we add Fromm lamb and lentil dry until Ali is on mostly dry. She can also eat freshpet (soft refrigered kibble) without any problems. Good luck and take it s l o w. You can get Fromm samples from some stores but it's not easy to find. |
My daughters Yorkie has this tummy problem due to allergies. She is allergic to soy, fillers, corn meal and many abtibiotics. My daughter feeds her Ideal Balance which is gluten free, soy free, etc. Her vet is happy with it and her dog has not had an episode in 4 months. |
Poor dude! Jackson doesn't have a sensitive stomach per say but I think his poop looks better on simpler more limited ingredient type foods. We've always had great luck with the Acana Singles - they have duck, pork and lamb. Duck is our go-to. Royal Canin has some good prescription limited ingredient foods... rabbit etc, but they are pretty costly. |

And natures variety agrees with her. Plus get probiotcs and digestive enzyme , vet suggested. This helps too. |
Wellness limited ingredient dry food for small breeds (fish is the protein source) and mixed with a little of the vital whitefish grain free (it's the wet food in the tube). In my experience the chicken and beef based proteins cause a lot of issues for dogs with IBS. I have had great success and am confident in the high nutrition value of both dog foods. They do have a fishy smell but the dogs love the taste and the solid stools prove to be worth it! |

My Vet has put mine on Hills ID or RC too when he had issues with diarrhea. She's always told me he has a sensitive stomach, so eventually I switched him to BB but he had issues with it in time and ate grass like there was no tomorrow. I switched him to Purina One Smartblend, but for the last 2 days he's been vomiting. |

Right now I have one can of Hills ID cause he has stomach issues of throwing up, but for $5/can, I don't think I will continue with it. |

I would be concerned of the throwing up .that landed mine in ER on IVS for 2 days last summer. Can't you give him Hills till he gets better at least? |
Hills ID has worked for us too. We have both the can and dry. I also have a home cooked recipe I use. My babies tummy just couldn't handle regular food so we stay with ID. |
McBride I sent you a private message. I am going through the same thing with my new puppy. |
One problem could be the fact that kibble is not easy to digest. The method for producing kibble involves a lot of high heat processing to create that hard, dry food. A dog with digestive problems is going to be stressed even more trying to digest and assimilate that food. There are alternative types of food that are more easily digested available and you could also consider home cooking. |
Gracielove I would have to say that is the only thing I have not tried yet is eliminate the hard food. I have tried pepcid ac but that has not helped as of yet. I only give him the hard food because i thought it was good for the teeth. I might go a week without hard food and see if that helps. |
