Food recommendation needed Hi All, So, Bentley has been on Fromm for quite awhile and loves it. The issue that I have or that he has is he does not chew his food. He inhales it. Lol. I have tried putting a golf ball in his bowl with his food and it still does not slow him down. And he also figured out how to remove it from the bowl. I then got a slow feeder device (not sure that's what it's called) and put in his bowl and that does not work. I am now thinking I need to find a food with larger kibbles and hope that he would be forced to chew. My concern is that he almost always vomits a small amount after he eats and the kibbles are whole. I am thinking this is because he rushes to eat. My yorkie Mason, takes about 5 to 7 minutes to eat whereas, Bentley takes about 30-40 seconds. Thanks in advance for your responses. |
Just in case my post wasn't too clear....I am needing suggestions on a food with a large kibble. |
I would think he would not chew that either and then choke. Have you tried puzzles? You may have to hand feed to slow him down. |

What size is your pup? I use Wellness Complete Health (purple bag). I originally used the small breed version of Wellness, but it was too small for my shih tzu and he would swallow it whole. The one in the purple bag is bigger and at first i thought would be too big for my 4.8 lb yorkie, but she eats it with no problem. Just takes her longer to chew and eat. |

He is 9lbs (biewer). I will keep Mason (4 lb yorkie) on Fromm because it is a great food and he does well on all flavors that I have tried and it's one of the only foods I have tried that he seems to enjoy. I don't mind buying two different types of food, as Bentley is not picky at all. Just need to find something that will slow him down a bit, if that's even possible. :) |
Maybe try to get a free sample of larger kibble and see how that goes...the issue I'd worry about is choking, but the larger kibble may be worth a try bc, who knows, maybe it will cause him to chew. |
I haven't had any luck slowing down my two- but I do buy the smallest food I can so they don't choke on it, I did crush it for awhile when Abby was younger but stopped as she grew. They eat 1/8 cup at a time (2X a day+ snack at nite) |
Have you tried Fromm's Whitefish and Potato formula? The pieces are flatter and broader...shaped kind of like arrowheads...maybe a funky shape will slow Bentley down? I had the same problem with Toki with "small breed" size kibbles. She chews up the Fromm Whitefish kibbles. And recently I've been feeding her the Royal Canin Weight Care/Spay-Neutered formula and she crunches those up pretty good too...the pieces are larger than Fromm. They are round and have little holes in the middle. Lotus has a large, kind of odd-shaped kibble if you can find that near you. Maybe check out Farmina, Hill's Ideal Balance Large Breed Puppy/Adult, Solid Gold Wolf Cub/King too. Just tossing out some ideas! Farmina will send samples and a lot of independent stores that carry Solid Gold will have samples of that too. Hand feeding also isn't a terrible idea if it helps. Hope you find something that works. |

I would strongly recommend that you try Farmina N&D. Armani is 3 months old and is on Fromm Puppy Gold and i have the same problem he just swallows his food. I just got some samples of Farmina N&D (their food is a middle / large kibble) and he actually chews on Farmina and i really like that because it is better on his teeth anyways. |
