11 year old yorkie with rancid breath
 
Hello, My 11 year old yorkie, Bentley has the most rancid breath that I can literally smell throughout my entire home. A couple of years ago Bentley was put under by my vet to have several rotten teeth extracted. A few months ago I noticed Bentley doing something strange with his mouth, so I brought him back to the vet. He said his teeth are just horrible and he would have to put him out again and extract more teeth. I left Bentley at the vet and a few hours later he called to say that his Trachael was going to collapse and he didn't want him to die on the operating table so he did not continue with the surgery. Instead he gave me some antibiotics. In the past month Bentley's breath has just become so unbearable that I don't even want guests coming to my home because he smells so bad. The vet has given me another round of antibiotics, which he's been on for 8 days now and nothing has changed. While I know he runs the risk of dying if we put him out again, I simply cannot continue to live with the awful smell. I'm new to this forum and was hoping to get some advice.

Hello and welcome to Yorkie talk! :) I'm sorry to hear about your old buddy- that is a terrible situation! I'm glad he is on the antibiotics. I would think based on his history (what your vet has done- such as prescribed antibiotics-and says needs done) and based on the smell that he has infections and of course infected teeth are very life threatening. I don't have any personal experience with tracheal collapse myself- perhaps there is a specialist who could perform the extractions in your area? Maybe a partial sedation with a block anesthetic like we use in human dentistry so pup doesn't have to go all the way under? I hope someone with more experience in this area will have better advice for you. In the meantime- welcome and best wishes for you and your little guy :rainbow:

Maybe you should get a second opinion or go to a specialist to see you options? The teeth will have to be removed for the smell to go away I am sure they are in bad shape. Does he have collapsing trachea?

Is your boy mellow enough to try partial sedation? With older dogs my boss used to use a tranquilizer and do a scaling if they would allow us! In rare instances he would use propofol but a lot of times we were able to do at least a scaling with a tranquilizer....my Cassie had horrible teeth when she was older and we stopped using anesthesia when she was around 10. When I moved from NY to virginia I started scaling them myself because her vet wouldn't do it that way. I would maybe search Google and see if there's a vet in your area that has experience with small dogs in particular ....even older dogs. I hope you are able to find a solution soon!

If the smell is that terrible teeth probably need to be removed. I do not agree with non anesthesia dentals I think there risky and end up missing a lot of what is needed to be done. Just because a dog is older certainly does not mean anesthesia is not safe.

Dogs with CT don't have an issue during anesthesia. It's intubation and extinction that can be a problem. I would go to another vet who is more comfortable with this. Scaling teeth at home does not help with periodontal disease or prevention.

Our vet, who we whole heartedly trust, was concerned that he may have difficulty breathing after he removed the breathing tube post surgery because of his collapsing trachea. We really had no other choice but to move forward (and pray) with the surgery and fortunately he made it through with flying colors! He has two teeth remaining! His breath doesn't smell anymore and he's not drooling, and believe it or not he eats his regular kibble food. He is a much happier boy and so are we!!

Yeah Bentley so happy he is not having bad breath. When cet gets their mint flavor toothpaste back on sale get some. It works for brushing and my boys like it. Just lift those side lips and use a small baby toothbrush. Mint mouth smells good.

Thank you for the positive update. It must have been scary for you to have the surgery, but thank goodness it all worked out well, even though the poor boy only has two teeth left now. I don't know why they need teeth as my dog for one never uses them to chew ANYTHING! :). So happy Bently is eating and no longer in pain and discomfort.

Happy to hear he is doing well. My Bella has really bad breath as well. Tried the mint chew sticks, treats, even special stuff you put in the water. Nothing has worked. She is medically fine vet says. Smells like rotten
fish.
