Coughing Hello, I just got a teacup yorkie about 3 weeks ago. He is 15 wks old and weighs 1lb. He is in good health, however he seems to have this cough. It's not kennel cough. The dr. said it is common in small dogs and he put him on amoxicillin, which is not really helping. Does anyone else have this problem or gas had this problem? |

Sometimes what is helpful is to videotape the coughing. There is kennel cough, reverse sneezing, and other reasons for coughing. Has he done the whole course of treatment with the antibiotic? On this site there is a stickey in the library that has a pretty good video of three of the different coughing sounds. If you are new to Yorkie ownership lots of great articles for new puppy parents too! I am sure your vet has told you this; but at 1lb you do need to be cautious about hypoglycemia. If you are un-certain about this let me know and I can direct you to some good articles as well :-) Welcome to YT |
Yes Bre has finished the tx of the antibiotic. Our vet has not mentioned anything about hypoglycemia; we have only seen him once and are going back on the 5th. He was saying something about the trachea being so small that when he breathes heavy it makes him cough. Idk I will check out those videos. Anything on hypoglycemia would be great! I think I read something about nutracal... |
Ugh I think it's tracheal collapse |

When does he cough? After drinking, playing, etc? My Lexi has coughed after drinking since I brought her home at 13 weeks old. She doesn't cough every time she drinks, but usually a couple times a day. She will also cough when she pulls when being walked, even when using a harness. I took a video of it to the vet and she said it does sound tracheal, but not necessarily a collapse. She did say that it is possible that it could turn into a tracheal collapse one day, but there is no way to know for use. She may just cough like this the rest of her life and not get worse. I also had a neighbor whose dog coughed after drinking his entire life and it never got any worse. |
Does he cough all the time or just when he is playing? Is it a honking cough. Could be trachea issue but even if it is a lot of dogs have lived long lives with it and it does not get worse. I have a puppy that is 10 months old and has done a fast quick hack when he is running around or chewing on his toys sometimes. At least once a day he does it. |
It's a random cough, not all the time but several times during the day. It may not b collapsed, but I believe it is a tracheal problem. I hope it does not develop into something worse. |
Hypogylcemia Symptoms of Hypoglycemia in Dogs Here is a link to an article on this. I would be feeding this wee one 4 times per day at least 1-2 TBLSP per meal, and also give him a TBLSP prior bedtime. Also if I notice an establish - immediately use the honey or the maple syrup, or in the States you have something called Karo syrup and then try to get him to nibble on some food. And then call your Vet. |
