Yorkie Attacked, Need Help Hey everyone. My 9 YO Yorkie Otis was viciously attacked by a Black Lab mix on Monday and was lucky enough to get away with two, 3 inch long superficial wounds to either side of the neck. He has those stiched now and a drainin tube in the center of his neck to drain fluids and infection...any tips on how i can feed him because he won't go near food. |
Poor guy. Have you tried maybe a little boiled chicken? |
That's the one thing I haven't tried, i have some formula to syringe into his mouth but want something more substantial. |
So scary! Glad he's recovering. I would hand feed next to his bowl. Once he starts taking it, drop some in the bowl. You don't want him getting dependent on the special treatment but you do need him to eat. |
Yes, this happened on Monday and the vet said today he has lost a pound since then. Got to get him to eat. |
You have the right idea - food that he will consider high value will be what he goes for. He is not having any trouble swallowing is he. If you boil the chicken in a little water when you cook it it might give you some broths that he will like too. So sorry this happened. Sound like you are taking good care of him. If he does not eat soon and keeps losing weight you might ask you vet for some mirtazapine - kind of given them an appetite, but can make them sleepy too. |
poor little guy, that is not good boiled chicken and rice and even green beans or baby food just make sure it dont have onion powder in it good luck |
How is Corey doing? Eating any better? Pip used to have trouble eating and I had to 'force' feed. It wasn't so much force as she liked it. I'd mix up her dry mix with green beans, boiled chicken and chicken broth. Then syringe feed her several times a day on days she didn't want to eat. (She eats well now, so no more syringe feeding) Does Corey have a fav food, that you could add to her meals? |
He HAS to eat....give him whatever he will eat at this stage of the game....he is loosing weight and calories are necessary to help him heal, let alone needed for just surviving. I would try baby food...chicken is bland and most will lick that right off your finger....he may like beef or veal or lamb....you can always syringe that into his mouth if he wont take it willingly. You should be able to get a little syringe from the vet with an irrigation tip on it for this. RC puppy mousse is also hi calorie....it is a whipped formula and will easily be fed by syringe. There is also a RC formula that vets use for critically ill dogs that they syringe feed. You need to get calorie dense formulas into him now...I cant think of the name of it right now, but your vet may have that formula too. You can mix a little Pedialyte with the mousse, just a little to make a loose pudding consistancy.....I would be giving him NurtaCal at least 3-4 times a day for the calorie boost as well as the vitamins it contains....I like Dr Millers Pet Nutra Drops better, and dogs adore the stuff....and it is easier to give than NutraCal..... |
Any update on your baby? Is he eating any better? |
give him anything he likes, like plain yogurt, cottage cheese, chicken baby food mashed potatoes flavored with chicken broth, etc. This is the third attack I have read about during the holidays. Millie LaRue a well known yorkie on Facebook was attacked by the neighbor's dog, also a black lab mix. She is lucky to be alive as she has multiple wounds and had to have surgery, her owner has gone through the same thing with her not wanting to eat, she found baby food and cottage cheese and cheese cake to be what she would eat. Prayers for a good recovery. |
she also did the Pedialyte and some nutrical. |
Any updates? Hoping the little one doing well. |
Dont you love getting all worried and concerned about one of our sick/injured babies and then.................nothing...............???? |
Yes I hate this and it happens all the time! I spend a lot of time praying for sick and injured animals. Makes me sad! |
