Is my puppy too fat? He weighs in at 7.8 pounds and is 7 months old. He is very active and loves to play with the other puppy that we have. I can't feel his ribs at all. He eats 1/4 cup of Wellness puppy food twice a day. He has Cheerios for training and 3 or four Old Mother Hubbard biscuits for snacks. Do I cut his food or treats or what else? Thanks in advance for your ideas. |
This link has a graphic showing how to determine if a dog is carrying too much weight: How to Tell if Your Dog is Too Fat or Too Thin - Albuquerque VetCo If you cannot feel the ribs with gentle pressure, that is a sign that he may have a little too much weight on him. I would cut treats rather than the nutritional food. 3 - 4 of the biscuits daily is a lot, and Cheerios can add up quickly. Plus, the Cheerios have sugar. You can substitute low calories treats like green beans or just use a single piece of kibble as a reward. I use the kibble as rewards, but I have to watch how many my boys get. They were earning a few too many potty rewards. :D |
It would be very rare for a puppy to be fat it's kind of like with humane babies. |
"just for humor!" ;) Generally, if you're asking that question, the answer is probably yes, BUT, I will NEVER say so. LOL Robyn and I just celebrated our 15 year anniversary yesterday so that is a question that I will never say yes to! LOL |

I fed him frozen green beans and a baby carrot for treats today. He loved them both!! Thanks so much. I will keep in touch to let you know how he is doing. |
He is too hungry!! I fed him his food twice a day and cut his cookies and cheerios out and now he cries from noon until 3:30 when I feed him again. I don't know what to do. I don't want him to be hungry and crying. He gets about 6 green beans twice a day and baby carrot at lunch time. I did change his food from chicken to whitefish salmon meal and peas. Do you think that might be why he is so hungry? |

He is probably not fat just going to be a bigger yorkie. My yorkie is 9 months old and weights 9.5 pounds and the vet said he is not overweight. |
