What puppy / dog food are you using? Hi! I am new to this forum (just picked up a 8 week old male Yorkie). I had a few dogs in the past but they were all large breed (German Shepherds) and when i had my large breed dogs i feed them Nutro dog food but i am now searching for a good quality dry food for my yorkie. I am trying to avoid any company that has had recalls, diamond foods for sure. Please post what you recommend and or use for your yorkie and any info that might help me. |

I feed both of my pups Wellness. I have done a lot of research after having issues with one of my pups eating BB. As far as recalls, I think it's impossible to find a company with NO recalls, but some definitely have more than others. I also look for complaints, which again, impossible to find any one with NO complaints. Overall, I found that Wellness is a well respected food with less complaints/recalls than many other food companies. The downside, of course, it that it is pricey especially if you buy the grain free. |
I will only feed him food that was made in USA without any ingredients from China.. something like Halo, Fromm - still have a lot to learn between all of the brands |
I've been feeding Canine Caviar for about.. 2 years and Peanut has never looked better. He has really bad seasonal allergies and this is the only food he can tolerate. They have a really good puppy food. Grain Free Puppy Dinner | Canine Caviar Products I like to mix a little wet food in his dry, helps him eat in the morning. I've had him on Weruva. This company is awesome and the food is human grade. The plant is in Thialand, this plant is the same plant that supplies/process the tuna for Subway. I've talked to the owner of Weruva personally and he has been so helpful and educational. This food looks and smells like human food- Peanut loves it. I'm comfortable knowing what I'm giving him. Weruva - People Food for Pets Good luck on your search. |
Anyone have any experience with canidae pet food? I was avoiding them because i heard Diamond Pet Food was making some of their food but i just got this email from them: Hello Jacob, I understand your concern. In the past we did have products made at Diamond, but for the past two years CANIDAE has been made at our Ethos Pet Nutrition Facility, owned by CANIDAE. The CANIDAE products you are purchasing now are only made at Ethos. I hope this answers your questions. I would recommend you leave the puppy on what the breeder sent him home on.....when he gets to be 6-8 months old, when his GI system is more developed, then you can consider changing to whatever you want to use. |
He was on pedigree, i have to get him of that crap ASAP |

Yorkiemom1 offered some good advice. I totally agree with you that Pedigree isn't a great food and would not be anywhere near my first choice. But honestly, you don't want to potentially introduce GI upset into an already stressful situation for the pup like switching living environments and adjusting to a new home. Whenever you decide to switch foods though, I definitely recommend Fromm. We currently feed the grain-free lamb & lentils kibble and some FreshPet which my two pups really enjoy! We have tried most of the premium dog foods out there and always come back to this brand...easy to find, great quality, and great price. Look into some of the Earthborn formulas too...Toki and Teddy both do well on this brand but I find we just can't get through the smallest bags that they have fast enough (wish I had a FoodSaver sometimes or more freezer space). Wellness Core is also a good option for a kibble that is easy to find in most major pet stores. Good luck with your new pup! Keep us posted :) |
We're getting switched over to all Wellness products for our two dogs. It looks good on paper. We shall see! :) |
We have an awesome pet store that i go to (that pet place) that carries all of the premium brands so i won't have a problem finding a certain brand. Anyone use Solid Gold? Canidae? Merrick? |

Solid Gold wee bits is a wonderful size for our 5 pound old guy even though we would prefer he ate his senior wellness. Hence, just purchased a larger kibble for our younger/larger pup. Still working out the kinks on getting a second dog. |

Then make a decision about the company. Some are not bothered. I just feel it is good to let people know., I am basically a Hill's Science Diet user....Ideal Balance except for the RX foods that some are on...and home cooking for a couple. |
