Need Help in the right direction Hello all, I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I recently purchased a Yorkie in May from the same breeder that I got his brother from. Long story short, I took him to the vet to get neutered and his liver enzymes were very high and the vet would not do the surgery as he said it was too risky. I immediately reached out to the breeder to let her know as there were two other pups in the litter (my cousin purchased one of them). She called her vet, who based on the test results, diagnosed a liver shunt. The breeder seemed genuinely concerned and offered to refund my purchase price for the puppy and that if she took him back, she would probably put him down because she can't afford the surgery. I can't afford the surgery and based off what her vet says, it will be a lifetime of special diet food, IF the surgery works. I even told her I would reach out to some rescue groups to see if they could assist with the surgery and that maybe we can split the cost of surgery if she took him back. This was over a month ago and I have called/emailed/texted her with no response. The last time we spoke she said that her vet maybe be able to find someone to help with the surgery. At this point, I am getting a little frustrated. I have been super patient and really believed that she was trustworthy. Does anyone know if there is some kind of recourse I can take? Or if there is a rescue group that would help with the cost of surgery? thank you |
Hi and welcome to YT I am sorry it is under these circumstances. Could you apply for care credit which is a no interest loan if you pay it off with in the specified amount of time. Perhaps you could share the costs with the breeder if the respond to you. I think you might have to surrender the dog to a rescue in order for them to help not sure. I have read about dogs that have liver shunt that are managed by diet and medication. Here is a link to a YT search to read up on liver shunt. Liver shunt - Google Search TThere are a couple ongoing threads right now dealing with this issue. I am going to ask to have your thread moved to the sick and injured forum and you will get more advice. Sending prayers for your Yorkie. Here is a recent thread http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ver-shunt.html |
Thank you. I will try to move it there. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I am sorry your pup and you are facing this problem, and that the breeder is not willing to help save his life. Surgery is recommended for a confirmed shunt to give the dog the best possible prognosis. From everything I have read on YT, dogs who have shunts repaired have an excellent prognosis. As suggested above, look into Care Credit. For surgeries like this one, payments can be spread over a couple of years interest free. The repayment terms depend on the individual vet's office. As Carolyn indicated, rescues require surrendering the pup to them completely. |
