trazadone dosage?
 
Vet said if I have trazadone at home, to let him know and he would tell me what mg dosage to give Toby the Tyrant to keep him calm while I have to kennel him. Well, I found it and now I cannot seem to get a hold of him to find out the dosage. Any ideas on how much to give a 9.2 lb sumo yorkie? I've been waiting 2 days for a return call from the vet...

Honestly, I'd give your vet another call and bug him until you get the answer you need. I'd hate for a wrong dose for a tranq to be given here, and have it result in something awful, ya know? I personally do not know the dose.

Indeed....very scary. Please don't give your pup such a med without a vet weighing in.

I take trazodone to help me sleep--50 mg--and it knocks me out cold (I weigh 150 lbs). I would be extremely leery about cutting up a pill that is intended for human consumption. I would definitely talk to the vet to get the correct dosage, and ask him if there are specially made low dose pills for dogs.

I just did some reading up on this, and it looks like the smallest pill they make is the 50 mg. pill like the one I take. Even so, I'm sure the vet will tell you to split the pill into smaller doses. Follow the vet's directions carefully, and good luck!

Well he called me back finally and said not to give him any more than 20 mg tops. Well, that didn't work. I could swear it didn't even phase him. He had a sudden burst of energy he refused to contain instead of getting sleepy. So vet said to try 2.5 mg of valium to 5 mg . so far i've tried 2.5 to no avail. I'm going to have someone here with me tomorrow to validate my impression that these pills just make him more hyper. Cause I swear he laughs at me and goes into spaz mode.

You're sure he's not hiding the pill or spitting it out? Dogs are notoriously good at that.

Certain medications can have the opposite effect of what is to be expected. Look at Ritalin, it's a stimulant for most people, but calms hyperactive kids. Lots of individual differences on the way drugs work.

i give it to him with peanut butter and it's so small he doesnt even notice. I might have to try ritalin if this doesn't work

no he has a tear behind his knee and he won't stay off his leg. He likes to bounce around on two legs instead of four and it is his back leg that has the tear. So we are trying to keep him calm and lethargic so he can heal.

What kind of tear? Like ACL?

honestly I can't remember. That is what my brain retained from the conversation. I can usually understand 90% of what my vet says ( he's ancient and has a cadence to his low slow raspy voice. he got his vet license in 1943 if that tells you anything) but I didn't pay enough attention to that detail. He did show me an excellent xray of it though. And wow xrays have come a long way. I could actually understand what I was looking at. It normally wouldn't be such an issue to keep him sedated, but Toby prefers to stand and walk around on his back legs. Like A LOT. And that doesn't help matters much.

If it is an ACL tear it would need surgery and I'm not sure it would show up on an X-ray. Maybe you shoukd get a second opinion from an orthopedic surgeon.
