what do you give your Yorkie for arthritis? The vet wants to start Daisy on shots for arthritis but I don't think she will let us do that. I think after one shot she will fight us and maybe even try to bite us. I was wondering if there was something simpler, like a pill or something we could grind up on her food. I am surprised that he wants to start out giving shots. I am reluctant to second guess him but I don't like having to give her shots to start out. |
I would try an omega 3 fatty acid. I also would ask for a prescription for Tramadol to be used on an as needed basis. This is exactly what I do for my older girl who has a grade IV patellar luxation that sometimes bothers her. |
Thank you. Is the omega 3 fatty acid a pill and is it safe for her? Her liver enzymes are slightly elevated and she is on Denamarin every other day now. I have Tramadol but I don't know how much to give her. The bottle says 1/4 to 3/4 tab every 8 - 12 hours. She is walking a little stiffly and xrays show arthritis in her hip. I was giving her 3/4 pill every 8 hours and she seemed doped up. Maybe I should try 1/2 pill at bedtime and in the morning. I really hate having to guess at this because I can't really tell if it is helping her. |

Yes the omega 3 should be safe, but you could double check with your vet. I'm using this: I give Daisy 1/4 tsp twice a day. She's 7 lbs. I give 1/2 tsp twice a day to the 10-lb boys. |
Thanks so much. I will check with the vet. |
It depends on type, location, and duration of pain as well as the overall health of the pup. You can start with Tramadol. Be consistent and watch for pain patterns. This ill not work well for some dogs. Standard of care for severe arthritis leans toward giving NSAIDs, but that is probably contraindicated in her case. The half-life of Tramadol is short, so it meeds to be given regularly. Without knowing her weight and the pill strength I can't say much about the dose. i can tell you that 3/4 of the standard 50mg Tramadol pill is a massive overdose se for a six pound dog. |
Daisy weighed 19 lbs when we first took her in for her liver problems. She has lost 1 pound so far and needs to loose a couple more. She took Denamarin daily for 30 days and then when her liver values were rechecked they were only 10 units above normal. So now she takes Denamarin every other day and is on prescription food. We also put 1/2 crushed Cosaquin on her morning food. At first she was waking up every night from 2 - 4 am, panting, pacing and whining. I thought it must be pain from her liver. I think the vet thought it was more from her arthritic hip that showed up from an xray. She has had peaceful sleep for about two weeks now but I notice she is walking stiffly at times. I know losing more weight will help with that too. The vet said her stiff walking is an indicator of pain. It is hard to know if the Tramadol was helping or how much to give her. Should the stiffness go away when the Tramadol is working? We have recently resumed our daily walks, starting off with an easy walk. She is really enjoying her walks and the last couple of days her old spunkyness and feistyness has returned. She seems full of energy. She is 11 yrs old. |
One thing I was wondering is if she should have something that will help the joint itself in addition to the pain pills. I think the shot the vet wanted to give her was supposed to help the joint itself. I just hate the idea of giving her shots. She hates me to clean her ears and she puts up quite a fight. I can only imagine how mad she will be getting a shot, especially from me. |
I think the joint could improve with the omega 3s. It's a natural anti-inflammatory. It's great she is losing some weight, that should help too. You also could use some heat to the joint if she is stiff. Place a wet washcloth in a small plastic zip Baggie and microwave it for 20-30 seconds. Wrap it in something like a paper towel and hold it on her hip. I did this with Barney when his shoulder was bothering him and he loved it. I would do it for 10 mins. |
Thank you. Great idea. I will try the heat too. |
What exactly are these shots the vet is suggesting? |
Adequan, a joint supplement that is supposed to help lubricate the joint. |

Thanks Ann, I am still debating if I want to give her shots. I know she will hate them. I believe the vet said you start with 12 shots over 2 months and then taper back. The cost is $75.00 to $80 per bottle, which contains 14 shots. He said some people give them to their dog, just under the skin, and some bring them in for the vet to do the shots. Either way, I just don't know about giving her all these shots. And if this is a new drug, I am not crazy about using Daisy as a guinea pig. This is a new vet (we quit our old vet because the wait time for an appointment is now at a week), and I am not sure if he is a person who is over treating her. I feel like starting on lower doses of med is the way to go, then increasing them as needed. |
