I have found the cause of the chronic diarrhea! It was the Royal Canin he was eating. For some reason B's tummy stopped tolerating it and it gave him diarrhea even though he was on it since he could eat kibble. We're now on Hills Gastrointestinal with hopes of transitioning him over to Hills for small breed. It's been several days and no diarrhea!

Little guy can even enjoy treats again. If anybody is having trouble with RC or diarrhea then think about giving Hill's a try.

Awesome! I am glad your little one is better now! :animal-pa I have not had problems with Royal Canin but if Beckham doesn't feel well one day and has those symptoms I will definitely consider Hill's.

Wonderful! Regardless of what you feed your baby, if he develops an intolerance to it, it must be changed! How fortunate you were able to hit the mark and find something that your baby can tolerate, so quickly! Excellent!

If your dog needs to be on a special gastrointestinal diet, you probably should be very careful what types of treats you are feeding him. What type of treats are you feeding?

I don't know that he needs to be on a GI diet. I'm going to try to transition him to non prescription food when this bag starts getting low. He gets bits of apple, chicken breast, or these organic biscuit things I found.

Is their any skin on the chicken breast, skin is high in fat and can cause diarrhea, also processed lunch meats are high in salt and sometimes fat. Remember, that the word organic has little meaning in the pet food industry, they are trying to make some of the same laws that they have for human foods, but right now it has no meaning. Even in the human food industry all organic means, is that natural forms of fertilizers have been used, like manure, instead of the individual ingredients of manure like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Natural fertilizers are thought to be better for the earth, but that doesn't mean they make healthy or safe food. For some companies, it's just a "buzz" word. In human foods, no chemicals are used on the crops for controlling insects, but this doesn't mean that the organic biscuits don't have other things that could cause a problem. Remember, no seeds or stems of apples, and not too much, some people suggest peeling the apple.

They word organic may now have some legal definition in the pet food industry, last time I checked it didn't, but it sounds like it means the same as with human foods.

RC changed their formula - so maybe that's why his tummy got irritated...? Glad you found something that works! :)

Boiled boneless skinless chicken breast with nothing on it. No spices, no salt, no pepper. He seems to be doing well with his organic biscuits. He also never had problems with any treats before.

Great, it sounds like you know what your doing, just wanted to make sure it wasn't any of these other things. Hope he continues to do well!

OP, I just read your previous posts about your puppy. Hopefully the new food is the answer, but if the diarrhea comes back I would suggest you have the vet check for giardia again. Often it is very hard to catch....it definitely should be a very fresh stool sample.

If it is a food intolerance, my guess (and I am not a professional, just sharing my experience) is that another regular food may cause the same issues. He very well could have IBD. I have a pup that used to have intermittent diarrhea and funky stools....we put him on Hill's Ultra Z/D and he is fine now. Another pup with a diagnosed case of IBD is on home cooked food. She had a scope done, so I know exactly what she has. There are a lot of tests that can be done with these pups....I would suggest that if the diarrhea comes back, you discuss with your vet the GI panel that is sent to Texas A&M.

Hopefully, the food has fixed it, but in my experience, I have never had one food affect a pup in such a way. (not suggesting it was not the food...just sharing my personal experience. :) )

My DaVinci has a sensitive tummy and has had diarrhea problems in the past. He was on a Prescription diet for years until a few years ago when he decided he no longer wanted to eat the RX food. I switched him to a grain free diet and he's been doing great. Even with the RX food I found him to still have problems with gas and occasional vomit. As I started reading about nutrition and dogs I read the list of ingredients on the RX food and it had too many questionable ingredients, i.e. corn, grains, and gluten. He's been on Castor and Pollux Organic grain free and the tummy troubles went away. I am currently in the process of transitioning him to Fromm grain free and he's tummy is doing great! The only reason for the change in food this time is because he's been eating the puppy's food and he gained 3 oz in a week so I decided it best to get them both on a food for all life stages because they eat each other's food. I started the switch on Friday and everyone is doing great!
