Merricks Grain Free Puppy/Merricks Puppy VS Wellness Small Breed Puppy/Wellness Core Note: What I mean buy the slashes is comparing Merricks to Wellness, and then the winner to grain free or not grain free (I don't have a puppy yet, but I read that grain-free has more protein). Which brand is better Merricks or Wellness? Those are my top two right now, though I heard that a lot of YTers recommended Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier but they recently changed their formula :( And is Sweet Potatoes safe for your dog? I read somewhere that they weren't... |
A puppy should stay on the food they come with from the breeder for a month or two because everything will be so new to them and will stress them out. I would not touch merrick with a 10 foot pole because they have some serious quality control issues. There is nothing wrong with a dog eating grain and there are a lot of dogs who can not handle to high of a protein. Sweet potatoes are safe for dogs. |

Thanks Lovetodream88! I am so glad that you told me that Merricks was bad. I will stay on the breeder's puppy food for the first few months (the breeder that I am looking at feeds Royal Canin), and then I will see how the puppy does on it, and go from there! Thanks again! |

I had switched my girl on wellness core when I got her, which she was on puppy chow purina from her breeders originally. I lucked out and she took the change beautifully, but she did start to snub her nose at the canned food after a few weeks and wanted to get into the big girl's bowl so I switch her to dry. My older gals also eat her puppy formula (no point in separating) for now when they used to be on a cheaper food. They showed the most improvement. I've been very happy with the results from wellness :) |
As a former salesperson for Blue Buffalo Dog food, I feel qualified to answer your question. Any holistic dog food company that takes themselves seriously has copied Wellness in some way. Wellness was the first dog food company to make a healthy holistic alternative to the main brands. They are long tested and well respected in the holistic industry. Grain free, however, has a lot more protein and there is not enough research done to prove that its healthier for your dog than grain. Sweet potato was originally put in to dog food for dogs who have stomach issues or food allergies. It is perfectly safe. |
Every puppy doesn't get stressed out when you bring them home. My puppy was very calm and never showed signs of stress. She ate, drank, pooped and peed and while I kept her on the same food as the lady I got her from used I only did so because it was what I had wanted to use at the time. If it had been a food I wasn't comfortable with I would have changed it and I'm sure she would have eaten it. |
