daily food? I have a 6 year old male yorkie that weighs aprox 13lbs, He is generally healthy except he has pancreatitis. We have him on Blue Buffalo "Blue Basics" canned food, and he has available to him some kibble that the vet said is okay for him. Today I fed him about 3 oz. of the food and then a couple of hours later he was at his food bowl asking for more. I gave him aprox another 3oz, and he ate every bite! How much should a Yorkie his size and weight eat daily? He is mostly an inside dog. |
Toki (3 years old) weighs 8 pounds. I feed her ~7 oz. of canned/wet foods each day (a little less/more depending on calorie content of the particular formula) and give some treats as well. She is lightly active and we are able to maintain her weight with this amount of canned food. My other pup Teddy (2 years old) weighs 10 pounds. When I feed him canned food, he gets a little more than Toki (between 4-4.5 oz per meal)... OR if we are feeding kibble, he gets a little more than 1/4 cup of kibble per meal as well as treats throughout the day. I know the number of calories he maintains his weight on and divide/measure the various foods I feed accordingly to meet that amount. How much has your pup been eating daily in the past and has he been able to maintain his weight? If you know how many calories he's maintaining on, it makes it easier to determine the amount of canned food/kibble combination to feed since you can go based on calorie content. Incorporating canned food, I would start off feeding the lower recommendation on the label (seems like that will be 3/4 can of the BB Basics if that's all you're feeding during the day) and regularly check his body condition and weight. I've found that my pups don't need as much as what is usually recommended on the packaging. Also, I'm not too familiar with pancreatic diets so I would double check with your vet on the BB Basics canned food especially if you think you're going to be feeding more of it than the kibble...it's seems higher in fat compared to Rx canned foods but again I'm not sure specifically the lifelong dietary restrictions (if any) for dogs that are prone to or have a history of pancreatitis. |
One place to start is to use a feeding calculator - this is a good one: Dogs feeding chart - Nature's Logic |
The pancreatitis diet is mainly a limited ingredient easily digestible type diet. we used to give him the Chicken and sweet potato treats. The chicken would digest and the sweet potato would come back up. Things like lamb and rice are supposed to be good also. The problem with our dog is he eats like he's famished some days and others he acts like he could care less about food. We substantially cut back the number of treats we give him(chicken jerky) because they have flax seed oil in them and of course that's a laxative. The vet said the beniful dry food was ok for him. She put him on some kind of prescription food, and he refused to eat it. We tried him on the BB limited ingredient Chicken and potato, and now they have turkey and potato, (he wouldn't touch the salmon). I suppose we are supposed to put the food down and take it back up if he doesn't eat in a certain amount of time. I just haven't been able to do that yet. He isn't over weight the vet says. |
I give my 7-lb yorkie .8 oz canned. Then 1/3 cup dry. He scarfs the canned and grazes on the dry the rest of the day. Usually there is some left the next day when we start all over. He has maintained this weight and vet saus his weight is good and he's very healthy. |
Jackson eats 1/2 cup per day and he is 18lbs and moderately active. 1/4 cup in AM, 1/4 cup in PM. Dinner is typically mixed with a spoonful of wet food. He also gets a Dentastix every night typically, plus a few other treats and chews throughout the week. In the summer when he swims a lot, I will often up his food to 2/3 cup per day. |
:animal-pa My Yorkie loves these healthy homemade treats! https://www.etsy.com/listing/2122196..._home_active_1 And she loves these treats too! https://www.etsy.com/listing/2103218..._home_active_8 But for her three meals a day, she eats healthy balanced meals, and its some sort of meat, poultry, pork, beef with brown rice and veggies! |
