Sizes and Deaf?????
 

Hello everyone! :) I just bought a new yorkie yesterday and I have 2 major concerns...

First off, I'm not sure she's responding to sound...about 70% of the time she just ignores every sound I make...I see her ears twitching once and a while, but she doesn't turn her head at me much. I'm not sure if this is because she's adjusting (since I've only had her for a night so far) or if she's partially deaf! :( I'm so worried...I have a vet appointment for her today but I just wanted to hear everyone's insight...

And right now she's about 1lb 2 oz..does anyone have an idea what her adult weight will be around? :) The breeder told me 6lbs but she looks so tiny right now. Mom is 5lbs, dad was 3lbs.

It does seem like she is very tiny, and reputable breeders keep the pups until at least 12 weeks and sometimes longer for tiny ones, hoping to get them up to 2 lbs.

Adult weight is often estimated to be double the weight at 12 weeks. If she is 12 weeks then she would be charting to be 2 lbs 4 oz, although that "rule of thumb" does not always happen.

I do hope that you are watching this pup closely around the clock, due to her tiny size she needs extra care. Are you aware of signs of hypoglycemia and how to treat it? I would be concerned if she seems lethargic, and possibly that is what you are seeing as non responsive to sounds. If that is the case, you need to make sure she is eating, and have some Nutri-cal on hand to put on her gums if she has signs of low blood sugar.

How old is she, most breeders don't want a dog under 2 pounds to leave them. Does she have teeth? Did you actually see mom and dad, most byb say mom is 5 dad is 3. It has more to do what mom and dad's parents and siblings weighed, than what they weigh. They may have both been the runts of the litter. An estimate, is to triple 8 week weight or double 12 week weight, but this is just an estimate and doesn't mean much. Glad you are going to the vet, maybe he can answer some of your questions.

She's currently 9.5 weeks old. Yes, I'm home 24/7 so I have been watching her closely..hence how I've noticed the lack of response to sounds. :(

I didn't know that 12 weeks was the standard :( No, I didn't see the parents..

I do also notice she does this weird quirk every few hours of bobbing her head randomly..is this something to worry about? Eating wise she's been real good on eating and drinking and hasn't had any problems in that area.

I just can't wait to go to the vet later to check up on her! :(

The breeder never mentioned noticing any signs of her not being responsive to sound? I hope all goes well at your vet visit and you can get some answers as far as her hearing goes. Make sure she's staying hydrated, eating well and getting her doses of Nutri-Cal because hypoglycemia can be very dangerous.

I'm sure the vet will have some answers for you. Maybe the head movement and suspected deafness is due to an ear infection or obstruction.

It would be a good idea to get health insurance on this little one, and know what kind of health guarantee the breeder provides, if any.

I hope all goes well and she grows up to be a big "little" healthy girl. Can't wait to hear more about her.

Yes! Whatever you do, get some good insurance! I just had a lot of problems with my 16 year old Pinky. She had bumped into something causing one of her molars to get infected. I didn't recognize anything wrong for a while. I was giving her a treat and found she had a matt below her right eye. Tried to clean but it started bleeding. Took her to emergency. They found that she had a very serious infected tooth. Earlier, she had bumped into something in the hallway. Didn't appear to bother her except she wasn't eating as much as normal. This could have been what caused the problem.
Her regular dr. did the operations and $1400.00 later she was lifeless. He found a heart mummer. Said she may not pull through. She lay lifeless in my arms for 8 days being fed her medicine, food and water through a syringe. 9th and 10th day she showed traits of wanting to get down. She went to some water I had set out for her just in case, food also. Being very weak, she soon began eating and drinking but being partially deaf and mostly blind she is very picky with her food, drinks lots of water.
I have found that she hears high notes sometimes and sees probably shadows. I have to let her smell my hand before I can pick her up otherwise she will jump into anything close by possibly injuring herself.
Sure hope you find something simple that will cure your little baby up!

Hi, I hope your vet found nothing wrong. But, just in case your new baby is deaf, it's not a terrible thing. I have two deaf dogs (not yorkies) and have always kept a deafie around. Seems as if people are afraid to keep them as pets and I seem to get on really well with them. lol
