Teething and diarrhea Good morning! Dex is now 5 months old and had a terribly rough day yesterday with teething. His poor little mouth was so sore, he was just beside himself. He was chewing on everything I'd allow, he was mouthing blankets, my shirt...just everything. I gave him Kong from the freezer, just everything I could think of. He didn't nap all day, poor little guy :( I finally got him settled into his playpen around 11 last night, and he was ok til about 5am. When we got up to see why he was fussing at that abnormally early time, we discovered he'd pretty much exploded all over the pen. Very runny stool. Diet hasn't changed. Internet search has been unsatisfactory with advice of discontinuing food for 24 hours and just providing water. I'm not sure that's appropriate in this case? Is this normal with teething? This morning he's being very sucky, all cuddled up beside me sleeping. The pain must be better or poor little dude is just exhausted. Thoughts? |
Hmmm...hard to say what's going on for sure. But, teething *can* cause GI issues - same in how it does w/ human babies. If it's resolved today, I'd probably chalk it up to that. If not, you may want to get to a vet asap, bc of age. Personally, I've never withheld food when my kiddos have diarrhea - and I def wouldn't with a pup this age...perhaps just feed something like carbs only - like some little pieces of white bread or white crackers. |
Thank you :) It seems to have settled down, no further episodes of diarrhea, eating and drinking as usual, and not as much discomfort as yesterday. I think it must have been just a really bad teething day and it upset his whole system. I'm feeling rather new mum'ish here and seeking reassurance :) It's been decades since I've dealt with baby issues...human OR canine! |
It's typical for a mommy to worry about her baby. I would be the exact same! I'm glad your little boy is doing better :) |
