5 month old in adult food Hi, Our 5 month old was starting to strain when he peed so we took a sample to the vet. The vet checked him over and tested the sample and found the type of crystals that could later turn into stones. He didn't see any evidence of an infection which apparently is rare anyway in males. The vet suggested we start him on urinary SO food. The pup loves the food -- it comes in a can and he really prefers canned to hard food. However, the trouble is knowing how much to feed him. He weighs less than 5 pounds and the instructions on the food say to feed 2/3 cup daily. However when we did that, it was obviously he wanted more. I looked up the information about feeding puppies and can see that they eat more than adults. We've upped the amount we're feeding him to about 1 1/2 cups a day and he'd eat more if we gave it to him.... Does this sound ok? If so, when would he go to less food in a day? Also, we're feeding three times a day -- do we move to twice a day at six months? Thanks. Linda |
I would talk to my vet if I was you. Also, I think puppy food has so much more in it than adult food. Maybe get a supplement? I am giving Lily puppy vitamins in addition to her food. |
Your kiddo should be getting somewhere around 7.5-12 oz per day. See this good feeding calculator for more info: Dogs feeding chart - Nature's Logic So, you're not too far off here. Each dog is an individual and some people may need to feed a little less, some a little more. You'd decrease the amount once your pup reaches >80% of his adult weight. As far as 2x day feedings, I think I went down to that around 6-8 mths or so. |
