Good Intentions but bad allergies for Buster Brown I feel bad for poor Buster Brown as I just received his allergy panel results. I had spent so much time agonizing over Busters food making sure it was nutritious and that he would eat it, a daunting task as most Yorkie owners know with our finicky little babies. Well I found out that he has been allergic to most of the food I have been feeding him over the years. :( Even the supplements like the fish oil for coat and skin. Buster is allergic to chicken, turkey, duck, pork, fish mix, salmon, rabbit, eggs, oats, soybeans, green peas, berries, and bananas, For his environmental allergies he is allergic to honey bees, house flys :eek:, storage mites found in dry food, feathers, his own yeast (candida) and bacteria (staphylococcus), pecan/hickory trees, ragweed and sagebrush, cotton linters, and pyrethrum? Surprisingly he is not allergic to fleas. Needless to say all my good intentions with his diet have contributed to a very itchy dog. So now armed with his allergy report I will start looking for new foods and treats, luckily there are many foods he is not allergic to so it is not overwhelming just challenging. |
Allergies Wow!! That is incredible that he has so many allergens to deal with!! No wonder you were so beside yourself with feeding etc. I feel for the poor dog, he must have been miserable a lot of the time. I don't envy you having to come up with the right food, quite a task. Also the environmental allergens are hard to exclude from his life. If there is any comfort in this information, at least you know now! Good Luck. :-) |

Aw, try not to feel bad that he's been eating allergy foods, bc how were you to know? Don't get down on yourself, most especially when you were trying so very hard to create such a wonderful diet for him. Now you're armed with this awesome info and can taylor his environment to it, which is great. Luckily, you still have plenty of proteins to work with. I feed premade raw, and I know there are nice proteins like bison, venison, pheasant, etc - and I know there are lots of kibble choices too. If you still want to supp with an oil, you could do coconut oil...they usually like that taste too. Let us know how he does...it will be fun to hear how he improves now that you have all this great info! |
Wow, the list of things he's allergic sounds almost like the ingredients of a "healthy" dog food. And many people treat environmental type of allergies with honey from their local farmers market. Even the fish oil supplements, you must be so frustrated, (yet happy to have some answers.) I guess Buster would have been happy with hamburger, corn and a few fleas! Best of luck finding him a diet he can tolerate. I wonder if venison might work, it's considered low in fat and I've heard of some foods with venison and sweet potatoes. |

Yikes, this sounds difficult. I think for now (since you are in CA) I would go to Just for Dogs and work with them so you have clean food to feed him while you do more research. I am curious about the allergy to honey bees? What does that mean? Allergic to bee stings? If that is the case you need to keep a prednisone shot with you in case he gets stung. |
Yup, Nancy may have found a good answer. Look at the Natural Balance website, there may be a couple Limited Ingredient foods he can eat. Maybe the Lamb? Good luck, I hope he will eat this stuff after all the "good" ingredients he is used to! |
Have you heard of NutriScan test by Dr Dodds? This would be better for food intolerance/ sensitivity. I got Turbo tested bc he was throwing up all the time. NutriScan Food Sensitivity and Intolerance Test for Cats and Dogs Turbo can't have chicken, turkey, venison & white fish but is ok w/corn, oats (all grains), potatoes, etc. I feed them Primal & Stella & Chewy's, he mostly gets duck, pheasant & rabbit. He didn't like frozen, so he was eating the freeze dried versions, but he likes the frozen again! Ever since avoiding the proteins he can't have, he has not thrown up. The nutriscan test was a life saver for us. If Buster Brown has yeast, it's best to avoid anything 'sugary'. No potatoes, no grains, basically no carbs as these foods high in sugar fuels the yeast. It's very itchy for the pups...all over, Princess suffered from yeast infections (she had numerous skin scrapings to confirm this). Now that she's on a 100% (premade) raw diet, her yeast is gone. She still has her enviro allergies tho, but it's not as bad. I did feed them Canine Caviar when they were eating kibble. They did great on it. I chose it bc it didn't have potatoes, wasn't a bz food & they liked all the grain free versions. |

I am looking at the Just Food for dogs website now thanks for the suggestion. I am going to go over the list with my Vet. I was disappointed as they grouped the berries together. I would think that they would have separated them in the allergy test since many foods have blueberry or cranberry as antioxidants. |
I'm so sorry to read this about poor Buster but you were and are doing your best! My Tibbe has eye goop at times on the hepatic food he must eat and severe IBS so that I'm so scared to try to change him to any other method of food for fear of another attack of diarrhea and vomiting. Right now he has a healing hot spot type place on his right lower back though he doesn't bother or scratch at it. I've used the medicated shampoo he's been prescribed, along with a Benadryl topical spray and it's healing up but boy, do I hate allergies! Here's hoping and praying that you can find out what to feed him that won't make him sick! |

I had to keep prednisone and an epi pen with my first Yorkie, she stopped breathing after bee stings twice. Benedryl is fine for minor reactions. |
