How long should you tolerate diarrhea after transitioning to a different dog food?

It depends, how long has your dog been having diarrhea? Make sure s/he is getting enough fluids, they can get very dehydrated from diarrhea.
Some people transition via bland diet, chicken & rice or turkey & rice, some add pure pumpkin (no spices added). Then they start adding the new food little by little until the pup is eating 100% new food w/out any problems.

How old is the pup? If he is young I wouldnt let it go long. When chachi was young I let it go 2 days and he had to be injected with fluids because he dehydrated. Diahrea is never good

I put him back on BB and they are firming back up....slowly. I wanted to change him to Orijen. I gave it about a week and they weren't firming up. Then a lady at the pet store suggested Holistic Select. I tried that for about 2 weeks and they were still too mushy but not diarrhea. And that is why I put him back on BB. But I read all this stuff online about BB and about how great Orijen is and I wanted him to be on that. And he really loves it and how soft they are. But I don't want to be trying to pick up diarrhea all the time. Plus he eats his poop, so he licks up what I don't get the next time we go out. His stomach is unbelievably sensitive. I tried the ground turkey and pumpkin Thursday night through Friday night and he threw up the turkey twice on Friday. I never give him people food or anything, he just can't stomach it. (he's 8 months) Oh, but we walk 3 miles a day, so I figured he would benefit from the high protein. But maybe he just can't handle it?

:thumbup: I would schedule a vet visit if it's gone on for a couple of days, esp if this is a young pup.

I didn't see your post when I posted...

U know, my dogs do not do well w/orijen. I think it's the multiple proteins that they don't do so well on. That plus if your dog had a bad reaction like he did, you'll never be able to figure out what he had a bad reaction to (if it was one of the proteins). I stay away from bz buffet food.
Acana does make single protein foods & many dogs do better on that.

I went out tonight and bought Acana. I'm going to transition ridiculously slow! I only put 4 pieces in his food tonight.

Also add a little can pumpkin to the food. Make sure it is pure pumpkin. Not pumpkin pie filling. It is fiber. It will help with the transition too

I tried pumpkin and turkey for a day and no improvement. Then I just gave him turkey and a half hour later he threw it up.

acana is good and not as rich as orjien, same company, and sun dancer from solid gold is great food, chester done great on it and then got tried of it

This is how I transition, may be crazy but it has worked on 7 dogs that I have had. Better to be safe then sorry is my motto. Cody is 3 y/o, not a puppy. I feed him twice a day, he eats 1/3 cup of kibble at each feeding. I COUNT how many kibbles fit in 1/3 cup. Lets say 30 kibbles fit in 1/3 cup, I will take out 2 kibbles and replace with 2 new kibbles, this is for morning and evening meal. Next day I take out 3 old replace with 3 new. Day 3 repeat, take out 3 old, replace with 3 new. Day 4 take out 4 old, replace with 4 new. Day 5, take out 5 old, add 5 new. Day 6, repeat day 5. Day 7take out 7 old, add 7 new. Day 8, take out 8 old add 8 new. Day 9, take out 9 old, add 9 new. Keep taking out and replacing until he is eating only new food. It's a very slow process, but has worked for me, Keep a log if you have to. Just a piece of paper with how many pieces of kibble was removed and replaced. The slower the transition with a sensitive stomach the better it goes for the pup. Good luck

I took my Yorkies off Blue Buffalo, they kept having very soft stools. Now on Wellness Complete Health purple bag and they are fine. You have to find the right food for your dog and it does take time. I went with Wellness because a friend who is a top show breeder of poodles recommended this food. All her poodles get this and they are doing great. So far I really like it and my Yorkies eat it no problem.
