Pork is if Fatty or not? Okay I am not talking about bacon, but the lean cuts of pork. It is not a meat I use for home cooking, but just the other day I cooked a pork tenderloin and it was delicious, and as far as I could tell very little fat. I know that pork manufacturers claim their pork is very lean, but is there an independent body the reports on fat% in meats? |
Barney has a very low fat diet and she allows a trade out to pork loin. Yes it's lean. I would only use pastured animals. |
Me too, there are several relatively local pastured raised farmers, antibiotic free, hormone free, etc, that I support through my local organic market. It is pretty expensive though for the big dogs - Razzman no problem - but it is good to know, because I can use the pork loin for high value treats for training :) |
I don't use pork for the dogs. I stick with chicken most of the time. Teddy and Winston get thighs, cheap and tasty! |

I have a lot of fish.... salmon, raw, is bad for dogs or potentially bad for dogs, but cooked, it seems like a wonder food for Gucci... a day after pigging out on BBQ salmon, he gave me a run for my money on our somewhat routine walk. I had to jog to keep up with him for the very first time about a week ago. |

my vet from day 1 said no pork of any kind, too much stuff in it, so never have given it |

I also cooked a pork tenderloin recently and found it to be quite lean. They say that today's pork is 33% less fat than it was several years ago. I think the saying pork is the "other white meat" refers to the lower fat, as it does in chicken. Of course it depends on the cut, tenderloin is lean, whereas pork shoulder is loaded with fat. |
I know some dog food companies have been coming out with pork based dog foods. I'm sorry that I have no study links. I know of course things like pig ears are very fatty and can be a big no no for some pups, I think I will have to look into it.... |
