Incredibly Nervous About Anesthesia Hi everyone, I'm probably being the overprotective "mom" here, but I'm having my 2 year old yorkie, Knox, neutered on the 22nd and I've managed to talk myself in and out of it 10 times today along (or so it feels). When he was about 12 weeks old, his former vet advised me to wait until he was 9 months before neutering because, direct quote, "little dogs have a hard time with anesthesia." That, of course, scared me. Knox is tiny - right at 5lbs - and I've admittedly been delaying the neutering ever since. The vet will be doing a blood panel before surgery and I have a list of questions to ask. I also read the anesthesia protocol which was extremely helpful. I guess what I'm looking for is feedback/reassurance from others with little Yorkies. Googling has been my worst enemy - all the not so happy ending stories! Thank you for any advice, encouragement, sanity provided in advance! |
Hi and welcome to YT :)! I totally understand your fears and where you're coming from, I feel/felt the same way. You should feel very good about the fact that you're doing pre-surg bloodwork as that will show you some reassurance that your kiddo is healthy and strong. As long as that bloodwork is good, he truly should do great under anesthesia! My Marcel was neutered when he was 3 lbs and my Pfeiffer was spayed at that same weight, and they both did just amazing. Just go forward, know your doing the right thing, and do your best to keep reassuring yourself that all will be well. :) |
My Lexi was spayed at 3.8 pounds and I was really nervous too, but she did great. She was back to her normal self by the next day! |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I am also in Virginia. :) Anesthesia/surgery does not make me happy either, but it is actually safer than some of the routine activities of my Yorkies' daily life. Anesthesia is not as risky as it used to be. As long as the blood panel is done before hand and there are no issues then he should be fine. Callie has been under for many things and she can be really sensitive but she was fine, she was under for a spay, dental surgery, another dental surgery, and two knee surgeries. |
Thank you all so much for your reassurance! Knox goes in tomorrow morning and I plan to call the vet today with questions about what kind of anesthesia, etc. I'm sure I'll be a nervous wreck tomorrow, so I'm trying to distract myself by scheduling a Pure Barre class in the middle of the day, doing some shopping - whatever it takes! I weighed him myself this morning and he was 6lbs - that 1lb weight increase made me feel more relaxed! He does get severe separation anxiety when I leave him, so that does make me quite nervous. If I treat my dog like this, my kids will end up living in bubbles! Thanks again! |

We all go through the nervousness when our pupsters have procedures, but you are truly doing the best thing for him. Hang in there, and he will be home in no time, and you will have this behind you. Sending lots of good thoughts your way :) |
Knox was neutered today and also had two baby teeth pulled - he's doing wonderfully. Perhaps too wonderfully - we're having some issues with keeping calm. He was home for less than 5 minutes before he trotted into the living room with the ball I thought I'd hidden well and wanted to play. The ball - his favorite thing ever - has since been placed on top of the fridge. :) He's a bit glassy-eyed and is settling down some now, but he did just fine. Thank you so much for all of your kind words! He got a little bit of diarrhea, but that's to be expected, according to the vet tech. They didn't give me an e-collar though. I've caught him licking at his incision a couple of times. I may run out and buy one if this keeps up. I've also had friends recommend infant onsies. Other than the fact that he did so well, the other great surprise today? My dad stopped in to check on him (we use the same vet) and decided to pay the bill while he was there. I had no idea until I picked him up a couple hours later! |

This is great news. That's so sweet that your dad surprised you like that. The diarrhea is fairly common after anesthesia. Thank you for updating. |

Glad to hear that your little man is doing good. I've used onsies on my girls but never on a boy. I would think it would hurt his "NoNo's" . I'll be curious to see what others have used to protect their little guys. |
