9 year old yorkie with allergies and tummy problems My vet wants to put my Bailey on Royal Canin Hypoallergenic pv, its venison. Bailey has many allergies and now has been having some tummy upsets that the vet thinks is related. I would rather not put him on this brand of food and am looking for something that has limited ingredients with venison in it. Bailey is allergic to poultry and salmon. Doc suggested venison, duck, or pork for his choices. My vet also is a holistic dr. Any suggestions? |
Arcana has limited ingredient formulas Our Products | Acana (they are manufactured by the same company as Orijen) and I have read great things about Fromm Fromm Family Foods |
Royal Canin Hydrolized Protien is an excellent food. Why are you against using RC? |
I must say I find it VERY refreshing to hear a holistic vet recommending mainstream, conventional and processed prescription foods. This vet is a keeper and someone I might even like if he/she were mine! As Jodi said, the hydrolyzed RC food is a nice choice as is the Purina HA. But, some like to try novel proteins and/or limited ingredient diets first. I think your vet is giving excellent advice. Consider yourself lucky! |
Thanks for the suggestions and replies. I actually went with the vets recommendation of the Royal Canin for Bailey. I did some research on it and all the reviews were good. I think in the past maybe i heard not great thing about RC, but this particular one looks great. Fed it to Bailey this morning. Keep our fingers crossed that this does the trick! |
Allergies are so, so very tough - so I really feel for you that you also have to deal w/ tummy issues. Are you sure it's a food allergy and not environmental (ie pollens, dust etc)? If there is an enviro component, the food won't help with that...although it may help w/ the tummy. Another thing you might consider is feeding raw like Primal, Stella and Chewys, or Nature's Variety...they do have novel proteins. |
Bailey was tested for allergies when he was 3 and he is 9 now. I know over time that you can develop new ones also. This is a list of his allergies that we know of, brewers yeast, flax, milk, peanut, soybean, poultry, and oat. Try to find food without oats or flax, but then it has soy. We didn't initially think he had a fish allergy, I was feeding Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream which is salmon and the vet thinks it could be that now that may be bothering his tummy. Otherwise he is a happy guy and to look at him he looks great! But that of course is his mothers opinion. LOL |
