Yorkie Appetite??? Hello All, My yorkie puppy is now 6 months old and I have a question about his appetite. I feed him 2x a day and most times he eats and leaves a bit. I don't feed him much (very little) so I know it is not because I am overfeeding him. Just have some questions. He is not a big yorkie, he only weighs 3.1 lbs but he is in great shape and is solid. Does anyone feed their yorkies 1x a day? I know yorkies are picky eaters, an am wondering how much people usually feed them. Appreciate any and all help. |

Thank Kreuer - My little guy is feed wet food mixed with dry so it is hard to leave down all day as it gets very hard quickly. I ultimately want to feed him dry but the vet said he is too little to do a starvation trial (put dry food down and pick it up if he doesn't eat it). Once he gets a little older I want to try it because feeding wet food is messy. |

I hear you. I was concerned that he only ate wet food because I thought that dry was better for their teeth. But, I spoke to his vet and she put me at ease. She said that if yorkie's have genetically bad teeth, then it doesn't matter whether wet or dry. Also, she told me that medically there is no difference between eating wet or dry food. Dry food is just mega easier. Also, I just feed my baby and he ate all his food just now. |

Yeah, I didn't stop the wet because of teeth concerns, plus I try to brush her teeth every day anyway. I stopped because every time she wouldn't eat all her food or wouldn't eat any of it I was not only wasting the wet food, but also the dry it was mixed in. Like you said, dry food only is way easier and nothing is wasted. Good luck with whatever you choose! |
I would feed at least twice a day if there a puppy. I am a fan of at least leaving some of the dry food down all the time. It's a myth that dry food is better for teeth no mater what you feed you should always brush there teeth. |

There are advantages for both wet and dry food. Most dogs find wet more appetizing plus it adds to their water intake. Wet doesn't have the preservatives in it that dry has. Dry is much more convenient and cleaner eating. You might try introducing a good wet food (get a small can so it isn't wasted) Feed her wet in the morning but don't mix it with the dry. Leave plain dry out all day. In the evening if you feel like she needs more food, give her some wet. Yes, it's messy but she needs calories. My pup eats fast and furious so I still feed her small meals 3x a day at 8 months. I don't mix wet and dry but she gets wet in the morning and evening and dry mid day. |
Mina is 3 yrs and 7lbs, She still eats 2small meals a day and a snack inbetween. If I try to feed her just the two meals she will throw up from having an empty tummy. All three of mine still do a lot of running and playing so they all burn a lot of calories. |

Thanks. My vet is awesome and very knowledgeable. She was my previous dogs vet for 8 years and now my new one. I always have questions for her. I can always call and ask and she'll respond quickly and in a way that makes complete sense. I go to the ASPCA in NYC. There are many vets there, so they always work together during pet rounds and during emergencies. |
when my boy was 1 years old, he is very picky about food and we need to handfeed him, otherwise he wont even finish half the food given. now he is 2-1/2 and we need to be careful of the portions we gives him as he is like a garbage truck. lol.. he even steal food from his brother... don worry, it will pass. |
I made the transition by giving him his dry food for treats to start with. Gradually decrease amount of wet dry combo til he eats it all then clean bowl and just put some dry in. You can use that to make your next batch as it won't go bad no waste. |
