Changing from Dry to Raw My 2-year-old yorkie just switch his food from kibble to raw food about 2 weeks ago. But, his breath gets a little worse and he vomits twice since then. Does anyone have experience on switching to raw food and willing to give some advice? Thanks! |
What kind of raw food are you feeding? Is it pre-made raw, like Primal? I have 2 that vomits frozen premade raw, so I only feed them freeze dried raw (w/water). Also, if a dog is intolerant of a certain protein, they can throw up. Maybe switch up the protein to see if he stops vomiting? Do you brush their teeth? Does he have any tartar build up? Calculus on their teeth is stinky. I still brush my guys' teeth every night even tho they're on a 100% raw diet. Sometimes a food particle can get stuck between their teeth & smell. If something got stuck, it will stick onto the toothbrush! |
I took my yorkie for tooth cleaning last week. So, the bad smelling shouldn't come from the tartar. I am feeding him the raw frozen food (bison), not the frozen dried ones. He vomited twice around 20 days of feeding raw food. Is it going to be a problem? I hope it will only be temporary :( |
The bad breath would be from teeth issues - if you just had them cleaned and breath is still stinky, I'd be heading back to the vet. Raw food isn't going to cause bad breath. If you've been feeding raw for 20 days w/out a problem and then vomiting occurred, I wouldn't really be inclined to think it was from feeding raw...I'd be more inclined to think he has a stomach bug/gastritis. How is he doing today? |
When he threw up, maybe he ate too fast? Turbo throws up when he eats too fast. I have to sit next to him & say, 'slow, eat slow'.:D When he throws up (which is very not often, maybe once in a couple of months), I just feed him again & he'll be fine. |
Terry usually eat very fast. So, it could be the reason. Also, I am not sure if the hot weather would cause the throw up. He's doing fine today. But, we decide to skip his breakfast for today. So his stomach can rest a little. Thanks for helping :) |

Terry does not vomit anymore, at least for now. Hopefully, the bad breathing issue will be gone after awhile. I hope the bad breathing is only because of food transition from kibble to raw. Otherwise, I will need to take Terry to vet again :( |
How about trying another protein to see if the bad breath continues or not? If it stops w/another protein, then maybe it was the bison...How is Terry's stool? I remember someone's Yorkie had bad stinky breath when her anal glands were full. |
He just finished bison yesterday. He will be having elk. |
