Please Help! Hi Everyone! I'm new to the site and have to say that I LOVE this site!!! I just rescued a 2 yr old Yorkie girl and am getting to know her. She is (no doubt) the apple of my eye! :aimeeyork I've never had a Yorkie before so I'm not really sure what to do about this... My baby girl seems to get a lot of eye gunk in the inner-corner of her eyes. I'm not sure if this is normal? Do you guys have any suggestions on how to take care of this? what am i supposed to do? Do you think it's serious? Does she need special medication for it? Do any of your babes have this same problem? I've been removing the gunk with my fingers -- i just don't know if there is a better or more appropriate way to do it  Thank you in advance for your advice! ;) |
No worries! I think Yorkies especially are prone to gunk around the eyes. As Mason has been getting older (now 8 months), he's getting more gunk everyday....or so it seems! What I do is wet a cotton ball and gently wipe around his inner eyes....the gunk will soften and will come off easily....and voila, that's it! I try to do this daily if possible. |
My understanding is that "eye boogers" are a common thing and I just wipe their eyes / face with a wet cloth...just plain water. I think some folks may use some wet wipes or special doggy wipes. My Lil Bit did seem to keep a wet face (from eyes/tears) and soon smelled really stinky!!!!! I took her to the vet and he said anything "foul odor" usually means infection and gave her antibiotic and eye ointment for 10 days.....doing fine now. But she does still have those boogers and we just clean everyday or so!!!! Good luck with your girl......These folks here at yorkietalk can give you tons of information....on yorkies and life in general! |
Thank you Deb for all your help with my Honey. She gets a lot of eye boogies too. I use a warm cloth evey morning to wipe her face and I also brush her beard out(spoiled rotten, lol). That stinkyness could have been from stuff that gets caught in her beard. Our morning routine has gotten her closer to me and she seems to trust me more. I also weigh her (she's 12lbs now). Have a nice day! |
Thank You! Thank you All for your great advice... it's really a relief to know that my girl isn't sick or anything. (no funky smell or anything) :) i will try your suggestions!!! THANK YOU! ;) |
Eye gunk does happen, you can use a Q-Tip, or a flea comb. Flea combs work really well and can get stuff a cloth or Q-Tip can't and it's what we use. |
I use a warm, wet, washcloth and a flea comb. I hate eye boogers and both Tia and Sandy need to have their faces cleaned every morning. Not the most glamourous part of my day, but well worth it to see their face booger free! Congratulations on being a new Mommy! Sandy is a rescue too! :D |
Thanks for the Congratulations...There was no way I couldn't take her when i saw her precious, darling, adorable little face....she's the sweetiest pup I've ever met! :) I am going to try using a flea comb when i get home from work! Thank you all for all your responses! |
a little off the subject...;) Best Brush... Is there a speacial kind of brush i should be using to brush my girls hair? Her hair is rather short right now. :) |
eye drainage... Welcome to YT!! Regarding the eye gunk, is it green/yellow? A greenish color could mean infection, kinda like pink eye. If not, then it sounds like normal eye drainage. A warm damp washcloth, cotton ball, or swab daily is a great way of cleaning around the eyes. |
