Trifexis Overdose? I have 3 dogs.....2 yorkies (3.9lbs & 5.5lbs) and 1 Maltese (7.5lbs). I recently took my 5.5 lb yorkie to the vet for excessive itchy red skin and she thought it may be flea related. So she sent me home with Trifexis, prednisone and antibiotics. I have always given my dogs the same flea medication as well as the heartgard....now the trifexis encompasses the heartgard so it's all neatly packaged in one tablet. I gave the trifexis separately to each of my dogs with some canned food as I know they can vomit after these pills so it helps to take it with food. I just realized that the package says for 5-10lb dogs. I am worried about my little yorkie thinking that this dosage might be too toxic for him? I gave it to all of them a couple of hours ago and they all seem fine. It being Sunday, the vet office is closed. Any advise? Has anyone else given the trifexis to a dog smaller than albs? |
I have never used Trifexis and my boys are larger. What time did you give the Trifexis? How is your little guy doing? I would try calling your local pet ER and ask them what they think. For the next heartworm preventative dose, I would choose one of the alternatives for your smaller 2 dogs, and probably all 3. Many dogs do fine with Trifexis, but there have been a number of incidences here of side effects. I believe Sentinel has both the heartworm preventative and flea control if you want an all-in-one product. Sentinel is a popular choice. |
Trifexis Would it be possible to call the vet who prescribed the drug for your pets to see if it is really ok? I would hope that he would prescribe the right doses for your babies. I don't know if the drug company has a hotline you could call also? |
I gave it around 8:00 this morning and all 3 seem to be doing just fine. Yes ok I will see if there is a hotline number to call just in case. Thank you. |

I would not give Trifexis again it's vary dangerous in my opinion, so many dog deaths linked to it even when the dog had been on it for a year with no problems and then all of a sudden there dead. |
Ok, I had no idea. Thank you for the info. Won't be giving it to my pups anymore. I honestly thought my vet had my pup's best interest when sending me home with it. Too scary. |

I have no proof that this is what made my Piper Girl sick. But, after giving her Trifexis she got very sick. After 10 days at the GCVS Hospital and thousands of dollars, we were able to save her. She will be on meds the rest of her life now. There have been many many deaths after Trifexis. So please read about it before you give them another dose. |

I know a lot of vets that recommend this....my vet will not give it to small dogs.....she will not give it to Yorkies at all.....at least she said she would not recommend it to mine. I also feel like there will be changes in the near future. |
Trifexis My 6 pound Biewer had a reaction to Trifexis (lethargic, no appetite) so my vet prescribed Activyl the next month. She had a worse reaction to it (seizures, and lethargy). We live in a heavily wooded areas and cannot get away from the fleas and ticks even though we keep her on the grass and the walking paths for her walks. I'm wondering what experiences people have had with Nexgard. |
My Maltese has been on Trifexis since I had him with no problem. I had recently bought a six month supply and when I took my a Yorkie to get her Rabies they ask me was I giving her any thing for fleas ticks etc...I said I had some Trifexis from my other dog and they told me that size is very important and to not give her those meds. The vet gives them their first dose free. When I got home, I notice they were for the same size pups..so I just kept it for a month then gave it to her. She had no side effects at all. So I guess it depends on your dog. Once u find what works, stick with it regardless of what others have experienced. Maybe you can break it in half for the smaller pups next time. |

Trifexis Reaction! I am Max's Mommy, he is 15 months, 6lbs. We tried the trifexis because the heartguard was giving him a bit of an upset tummy. We ended up at the vet with a possible neurological seizure. He was looking up at the ceiling, opening and closing his mouth over and over and was very lethargic. I gave the trifexis with a full meal on a day that I would be here. (Thank goodness!) He is fine now, thanks to two very patient and loving vets. We are switching back to heartguard!!! Please monitor your little babies on the first dose, this stuff is strong! |
