wet food preferences I just started feeding Lexi on a schedule twice a day and started mixing a little wet food with her dry (more willing to eat it that way). Just wondering what wet food you all like to mix with the kibble. Do you prefer the wet food with whole chunks in the gravy or the blended kind and what are your favorite brands? |
There are a lot of good ones out there but my pup has a pretty sensitive tummy so I have to be careful. If you are just using it as a topper Wellness Core might be a good choice. It's grain free which some people prefer for their dogs. |
Wet food fanatics over here! I've fed a lot of different types and definitely prefer the stew/chunky types over the ground/pâté style. If you're looking for something easy to mix into kibble, I recommend a type like Weruva that's shredded and in a soupy liquid...TikiDog is also a good quality...shredded meat but not as much liquid as Weruva. Nature's Recipe is similar in consistency to the other two I've mentioned but available at more common stores like Petsmart/Petco. I also really like the moist tub type foods like Earthborn or Natural Balance Stews...again, they contain more liquid so it would be easy to mix with dry food. These are also pricier but if you're only using a small amount, it's probably not as big of an issue. For the past couple of months, I've been feeding Toki primarily Hill's chunky stew style food (both Science Diet and Ideal Balance)...she does really well on these! They're not really easy for mixing though since the chunks are somewhat firm and quite large (maybe up to a square inch). I personally don't care for the ground/pâté canned food...I'll feed some of the types that come in single serving cans or if I find a good deal on a brand I like but it just seems messier and stinkier to me...and I just prefer the chunky types. I will say when Toki was a puppy and eating kibble, I would get a can of the ground food and flattened it in a ziploc bag to put in the freezer. That way it was easier to break off a small piece to thaw and mix into her kibble and wouldn't go bad before we used it all. Just some of my preferences! |
Thanks for the advice. So far I have bought the Merrick stew. She seems to like them. One had huge chunks though, but I was able to break them up a bit. I will try some of your suggestions! |
We are Weruva fans here :) The boys love it! I also get Tiki Dog sometimes, and they love that as well. I used to have to order it online, so I would try to get a years worth since shipping was pretty expensive. We moved and now have a couple pet stores close that sell both Weruva and Tiki Dog! |
weruva for chester, he loves it |
Seems a lot of people like Weruva. Looked it up and they don't sell it anywhere around here, so I will have to order some online. Thanks everyone! |
Question Since this is a 14 oz can and it wont be fed in one feeding do you have to store it in the refrigerator after it's opened? |
I store it in the refrigerator with a plastic bag over it. Refrigerators are filthy and you don't want to cross-contaminate. |

I always just pour the rest in a Tupperware container and put in the refrigerator. |

Since I only use it as a topper for their dinner, when I open a new can I put it in baby food trays (like ice cube trays, but BPA free and they have lids) and freeze it. They get a cube each (defrosted in microwave for 20-30 seconds) with their kibble, and we do 2 cubes each in the summer to keep their weight up with the extra walks. This really makes each can last and nothing goes to waste! |

I like this idea.... thanks! |
We're Weruva fans too!! That is crappy you can't find any!! Peanut loves it so much. Like you I mix the wet in with his kibble. You know what else is good is the Stella and Chewy's. They have freeze dried that you can sprinkle on the kibble and add a little water. They also have these Carnivore Crunch treats, I use these a lot I will crunch them up and mix then in his dry. They have salmon, turkey, duck, chicken, beef. Peanut's fav is the Salmon. I try to mix it up for him as he has a sensitive tummy- He is strictly on his Canine Caviar kibble, and Weruva wet food and then I mix it up with the Stella & Chewy's . I'm not so much into the freeze dried lately as I'm more into the Carnivore Crunch treats. They also sell cans of pumpkin and sweet potatoes!! I have a couple cans of those and will bring that into our routine as well. |
