My Little Guy Doesn't Like to EAT! Hi All - I'm new yorkietalk! I have a little 1 year old, 5.2 lb pup name Bucco. He's adorable, very energetic, and super happy! But my little guy doesn't like to eat. He never has. He's been on about 5 different brands (Fromms, Royal Canine Yorkie, Natures Balance, and now Stella & Chewy). Stella & Chewy is a premium freeze dried raw.. and he's been doing well on it for a few months. There are different flavors so I can mix it up for him every so often. For a while, he was eating very well... twice a day, every day. Well, that's changed and he's back to his old habits. I had a sample of Orjien, which he liked for a day.. but now won't look at it. He's never gone for more than 2 days without eating.. but I'd really like him to eat on a regular basis. I might try Blue Buffalo. My sister uses that.... but I don't know. Luckily, he doesn't have a sensitive tummy, so I can easily change his foods without issue. Any advice? |
Bucco Welcome to YT. :-)) I am sorry you are having these issues with food. It sounds like you have been through lots of choices for a picky eater! The first concern I would have is that he may have some underlying medical issue, even though his tummy seems ok. Did you tell the vet about this eating problem and have any tests? Some, here have sprinkled a little Parmesan cheese or other tasty morsels on top of the food to entice their picky dogs. Some dogs are very fussy about the dish the food is in.....weird I know! Have you tried feeding him the kibble by hand at first until he gets the taste and eats the rest on his own? Do you have a regular schedule when you are at home and for feeding him? Does he get enough exercise to make him hungry? So many reasons out there for picky eating as you will see on YT! I know I had a dog that would not eat unless a man was present!! My hubby, the painter....any male. LOL! Good luck, I feel for you having had dogs that were hard to feed. I am sure others here will give you their ideas too. |
You are making him a picky eater quit switching. Pick a food and stick with it. Its okay to change flavors though that gives variety. Your just going to have to practice some tough love he wont starve himself unless there is some medical reason why he wont eat. So if he continues not to eat I would take him to the vet to have wellness bloodwork and a bat done where they could check if he has problems with some organ and thats why hes not eating. I saw a dog on here with kidney problems and her only symptom was she wouldnt eat. I dont want to scare you because there are just picky eaters but sometimes there is more going on |
Have you tried wet food instead of dry? Might be worth a try. |

Wow I've never heard of a dog snubbing Stella & Chewy's...my guys eat it like it was their 1st time eating it & they've been eating it for almost a year. Have you tried Primal? Also an excellent company. |
picky eater? I don't want to alarm anyone; but saw an earlier post regarding testing by a vet. I think this is a good idea. I have experienced a boy that wouldn't eat much/no appetite and was lean to the point of being thin. Very active and seemingly healthy otherwise. He injured his foot, and when we went in for x-rays the vet discovered that he had a slightly enlarged heart. She said that could easily be the cause for his lack of appetite. Just thought I would encourage a discussion with your vet. Hope all is ok and your little one proves to just be finicky! Good Luck. |
Gracie was the first dog I ever had that refused to eat dog food. I got desperate and started searching for an answer. I home cooked for her until I found Stella & Chewy's. It was the first dog food she actually liked. I have tired other raw pet food brands but always come back to S&C. We also use the frozen S&C's. She of course prefers the freeze dried to the frozen. I always make sure she is drinking extra water or else I rehydrate the freeze dried. It's really important that they get that extra hydration when eating a freeze dried diet. Gracie does have occasional days where she seems to snub her food. I just take it away and try later or even let her go till the next day to eat. Make sure your guy isn't sneaking snacks from somewhere else. It won't hurt him to miss a meal. Maybe he has decided he doesn't like whichever meat you were feeding him? I know Gracie is not particularly fond of the lamb. |
Been there done that Thought mine was a picky eater too , turned out she does have a sensitive stomach ...not picky. After collapsing and being on IVS for 2 days she is now happily on Hills prescription ID canned and loving it. She is a different dog. |
My Huey is not an eater. He has never eaten "eagerly" and sometimes will go 2 days on one meal. He likes treats and his weight is fine, so I put out his <1/4 cup of food at 7-8 am for his breakfast, and if it is gone at 5pm, another <1/4 cup for dinner. If he hasn't eaten, I don't take it up, I just leave it until he eventually eats. The only time he seems to eat on schedule is if I'm getting ready for work (nights). Ha always seems to eat when I am in the shower (but only when I'm getting ready for work. He doesn't eat if I'm in the shower any other time of day. ..little weirdo.) |
