Pepcid AC
 

Mia has been throwing up yellowish foam off and on for a few weeks. Vet said it sounds like acid reflux and to put her on 1/4 a tablet of Pepcid AC. Anyone else have to give their yorkie Pepcid for acid reflux? I just bought a pack but am always hesitant to give them something outside of the norm. Vet says it is safe to give to dogs so I guess I need reassurance. Originally I took her to a different vet who felt something odd under her belly so they did an X-ray. The vet noticed an abnormal object in her tummy and small intestine. She was acting normal aside from occasionally throwing up so i waited and took her to my main vet the next afternoon. He didn't notice anything abnormal with her body and said the object on the X-ray could be food and wasn't a clear indication of something blocking her system. He said when dogs have blockages, they are really sick and can't keep any food down. She had been pooping and peeing normal as well as drinking and eating. So $400 later, I'm ordered to give her Pepcid AC so just wanted to know if anyone else gives this to their pups.

Yes I give it to my boy who can throw up yellow foam in the early am when his tum is empty. This was prescribed by the vet after tests that showed he had an acidy stomach. No side effects and he is doing well on this drug.
Hope your baby does well on it too.
I have slowly reduced the dose to 1/8 of a 10mg tablet now. I found it hard to split the tablets and have found a pharmacy that makes up the dose in a chicken chewy that he takes easily and loves!
Hope your Mia does well on this and that she feels better.

Does she throw up bile throughout the day, or just in the morning?

My ZoE is the pukiest dog I've ever known. Her vet recommended Pepcid too. I, however, was hesitant to medicate her daily. ZoE is primarily an early morning vomiter. I can keep on top of it, if I adhere to a structured daily feeding routine. She has to eat every evening around 11-11:30pm and then right at 6-6:30am. She also needs an afternoon snack and an evening meal around 5pm. If I stick to this, she doesn't vomit bile.

Now, my main issue is any day I'm later coming home from work, and she then doesn't get an afternoon snack and her evening meal is late. Zo is strange in that she wont eat if I'm not there. Weird! I will leave her snacks and kibble out, when if know I'm going to have a long work day, and she won't touch it while I'm gone. But as soon as I get home, she will start eating whatever I had left out for her to eat while I was gone. I don't understand why she'll let bile build up in her belly and then vomit, rather than eat food by herself.

If I have to resort to Pepcid in the future I will.

I gave Pepcid twice daily for one of my Rainbow Bridge babies. Her doctor said it wouldn't harm her. She was already onanither description, unrelated stomach medicine, and she was sixteen years old.

It's rare, but whenever Katie vomits bile I give her 1/4 of a Pepcid.

Yes, I gave it to my bile vomiter who was one who vomited early a.m. when her tummy was empty. I also gave her a little cottage cheese or yogurt right before going to bed.

I give it to my adult Chesapeake Bay retriever. For this 90 pound dog, Vet prescribed one 10 mg tablet twice daily. Since you're giving 1/4 of a tablet, I assume that means you're giving just a tiny bit, 2.5 mg, for a Yorkie.

I have two pups on Pepcid AC. I find that giving it at bedtime works best. They seem to have more issues in the mornings when their tummies are empty.

I give Maggie 1/4 tablet of Pepcid AC at night time. Her tummy makes noises at night time and the Pepcid seems to help calm it.

I will have to try that. Sammie does the yellow bile sometimes first thing in the morning or after a car ride. He burps a lot so I think he has acid reflex!!

Jackson does this too (not throw up bile) but he won't eat until I am home!! It's crazy... sometimes he goes running to the water bowl too after I get home, like he's sooo thirsty lol. Even though he had it available all day :rolleyes:

Lots of dogs are on Pepcid. My Marcel was on 1/4 tab for a while, and then didn't need it anymore.

This is Turbo's story. His case was very different, very unusual. He would vomit yellow bile, sometimes in the morning, or afternoon, even @ night! Sometimes there would be some food mixed in or just white foam, basically, he was vomiting all the time, everywhere!
I tried pepcid ac, tagamet (both vet prescribed), nothing worked. Did some research & found that when dogs are intolerant of a food(s), they throw up. I was wondering if there was a test for food sensitivity/ intolerance since there is one for allergies & someone posted about Dr Jean Dodds' NutriScan test. I ordered it, got Turbo's saliva sample, sent it back in & got the test results in a week.
He was intolerant/ sensitive to chicken, turkey, venison, white fish...all the proteins I was giving him! He wasn't sensitive to any grains like corn or oats, was ok w/potatoes, pumpkin, etc. Now I avoid those proteins & he has not thrown up! It was the answer for us & the best thing I did for him.

My Dallas is almost 16 months has had a problem vomitting for a while. Vet tried him on yogurt and pumpkin only ate pumpkin for a while. Yogurt hasn't helped . He vomits yellow liquid or foamy yellow with grass. I just found out this morning that it's acid related. So he is on pepcid . Still runs around but has slowed down eating he eats twice a day usually . Anyone hear of giving apple cider vinegar in food? Also , wetting dry food a little would help I have read any thoughts on that. Not a fan of giving him meds but if it helps and he isn't harming I am for whatever is best for him. I also give it to him in morning. Thanks for your input it helps all of us. Can you let me know what food you feed them . Not sure I want to change his food at this late stage but just a thought. Hi. Sorry your baby has these issues. In my post number two above I wrote that my dog had Pepcid too.
After he had a bout of pancreatitis he also had an acid stomach that the vet prescribed pepcid for. He eats four small Hills ID Low Fat kibble as he always is hungry but tended to throw up foam in the am if not fed on time. I do feed him a little food prior to bed. I have been keeping to this low fat regimen for years and he has been fine. I get special chewy Pepcid from a vet compounder and vary the dose at night with his last snack from a third of the 5 mg chewy to a quarter of the chewy. It is so much easier than the human tablets to split, and is chicken flavored so he loves it. If he needs it in the day I can give Pepcid then too. But so far he has been doing well with no ill effects on his lab tests so far. So long term it has been fine here. He is 10 pounds in weight.
I have not tried the vinegar.
I wonder if your dog has been tested for some GI issue that is causing his problem? Also more frequent meals, or the canned food, and no high fat treats might help? Good luck.
I too hate giving meds but this one has been a great help with my dog anyway.

What tests have been done? Your vet has not suggested a food for him? What is he currently eating?

I would not put vinegar in his food.

How often does he have this issue with vomiting?
