Dentastix = Good or Bad ? What do you think of these ? My dogs love them but I am not sure how healthy they are ( the dentastix ).:) http://www.pedigree.com/really-good-...D_BwE#overview |
They are alright, but after using them for awhile I find that they might work best for dogs that already have good teeth or mild dental build-up and would be good for maintenance. When they don't quite have the best teeth, they don't seem to do as much as I would like, in my opinion. My dogs like them ok at first but then they kind of got bored with them fairly quick, but may still eat them (just not with as much gusto) As for if they are actually healthy, I would assume they are decently healthy but like any other "snacks" it's best in moderation. There was something else that I used from Milkbone that came out not to long ago that worked well (can't remember the name), but again, my dogs got tired of them, but may still naw on it some. ^^;; If your dogs loves them and they work well, then I don't see why not keep using them. |
Here are the ingreds: Rice Flour, Wheat Starch, Glycerin, Gelatin, Gum Arabic, Calcium Carbonate, Natural Poultry Flavor, Cellulose Powder, Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Salt (Iodized), Potassium Chloride, Vitamins (Choline Chloride, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate [source of Vitamin C], Vitamin A Supplement, Niacin, D-calcium Pantothenate, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin [Vitamin B2], Pyridoxine Hydrochloride [Vitamin B6], Dl-alpha Tocopherol Acetate [source of Vitamin E], Thiamine Mononitrate [Vitamin B1]), Potassium Sorbate (a Preservative), Smoke Flavor, Zinc Sulphate, Green Tea Extract, Turmeric, Iron Oxide, Copper Sulfate. Kind of a lot! These treats are pretty much carbs - nothing wrong w/ that, I just mostly prefer my dog treats to be protein based. These treats are probably made in China - so if that bothers you, you may want to check the bag. I think I tried these when Wylie was a puppy and I believe they become really gummy/sticky and kind of messy, just fyi. |
I'm not a fan I prefer naked chews which are like denta sticks but healthier. You can find the small ones at Petco but I order the large ones so it takes Callie a bit longer to eat them. |

Awesome , I will check out Naked Chews .. :) |
I use them *shrugs* I'm not too worried about a once-a-day treat that isn't the majority portion of his diet, and I honestly feel they DO help his teeth a bit. Not a lot, but they seem to freshen his breath after he eats them. He really loves them, too. My dads dog has horrid breath and definitely needs a dental (good luck convincing them to get her in to do it though!) and the Dentastix definitely improve her breath when I give her them. I use the Get Naked small chews too but the larger ones, he won't eat, he just carries them around and whines looking for a place to bury them. LOL... I just tried these new Milkbone dental chews too but he doesn't seem to like them as much. But they were approved and proven to reduce tarter by the VOHC. |
Thank you , maybe I will buy a pack of each and alternate ..:) |

Both vets I have sell Virbac chews and toothpaste. The chews really help the back teeth stay clean. I give my 4lb. pup 1/2 chew a day and I TRY to brush her teeth  |
