How do you brush teeth? Do you use a bristle type finger brush or a terry cloth type 'finger sock' (sorry don't know what it's actually called) Joni likes the toothpaste and will chew on the sock so I try to rub around each tooth while she's chewing but just not sure I'm getting them all clean. I suppose it's better than nothing. I'm also afraid to hold her too firmly - she's a wiggler! Tips? |

I use those plastic finger brushes or a small toothbrush, and one of my two Yorkies made it 10 years on just two cleanings before needing any teeth pulled. My small Yorkie, however, lost 3 teeth at her 2-year cleaning and 7 teeth at 5 years recently. Genetics has a lot to do with it, of course. A YorkieTalker friend uses a SoniCare on her dogs' teeth. She got them used to the sound slowly (there's a low setting on some sonicares). She says her vet raves about her Yorkies' teeth. I tried it, and mine are terrified at the sound. I didn't get one with a low setting :( |
I recently saw some "tooth sponges" that I though were really interesting. They have this small, somewhat thin square sponge on the end of a sort of ring. Suppose to get into harder to reach spots which I was thinking wasn't a bad idea, especially for smaller dogs or puppies. I looked at those finger brushes and then thought that looked a little big/uncomfortable for little puppies, but fine when they are older adults. It says you can use it alone or with doggie toothpaste. I plan to eventually get those, myself, as it looks like it'll be good to start with. Otherwise we've used small or baby human toothbrushes (with soft bristles) before and it seemed to be fine :3 |

Most Vets. carry the long handled small tooth brushes. I have several because they don't last as long as a childs toothbrush. My Azrael is going in on the 15 th for another dental cleaning and is the second one for her. She's 9 years old. Some Yorkies just tend to have bad teeth, so it's very important to brush every night. |

I don't brush. I give them lots of chews and then use Healthy Mouth 2x a day and the Wysong Dental sprinkle 2x a day on their food. |
Thanks for the tips on the sonicare brush. I suppose I can use my old brushes. Sanitized in denture cleaner. For the pups. Im truly ignorant on what formula to use as far as paste. Any suggestions or recommendations. Thanks. Appreciate it. |
So I added a baby toothbrush to our cleaning routine. My biggest problem however, is Joni wiggling away while I try to brush. She's interested in the brush (or 'sock' or finger brush" whichever I'm trying to use) but she wants to chew on it and I don't feel like I'm getting a thorough cleaning done. She jerks her head around so much fighting me for control and I'm so afraid to hold her any tighter. I typically just wind up letting her chew away while I hold it in her mouth, figuring something is better than nothing. I hope that by just continuing this daily that over time she will let me brush more. Wylie's mom, I'm interested in the products you are using and will look into that more. I have a very trusted, capable vet - should I just let her advise when/if a dental cleaning is necessary or is there a rule of thumb on when the first dental cleaning should take place. That procedure really scares me due to the potential CT issue. |
