Rear Odor Several times a day my Yorkie is giving off a strong, disgusting odor from his bottom. It only goes away after I wash his bottom with soap, but comes back several more times in the day. The odor sometimes appears a while after he eats and sometimes appears when he starts barking and freaking out at what he perceives to be security threats (disembodied voices and noises, people walking by the house, other dogs, etc). The odor can even get on clothes, like he's secreting a stinky invisible fluid. We joke that he's part skunk. We've emptied his anal glands of course, but the problem still persists. Does anyone have any ideas what could be going on? |

The problem is that he goes through phases. There will be weeks where nothing happens. Then there's weeks where it's every day or every other day. I feel like if I go to the vet they're not going to be able to do anything. |

You may want to see another vet, sounds to me too that it is an anal gland issue and that expressing them is not enough. My pup had to have her's expressed every 2 weeks and sometimes more. There aren't many other ideas of what it could be other than that. Keep us posted, I'd really like to hear what you find out. |
Yes, I agree with the others. It does sound like an anal gland issue. I would talk to your bet about adding more fiber to his diet and possibly even changing food. I've gone through anla gland issues with Bogey and with a little bit of time, working with my vet, food change, more fiber I think he's on the right track now. You can start by adding a fibrous food like canned pumpkin. What are you currently feeding? |
Do you think it could just be gas? |
This is most likely an anal gland issue bc of the bad odor you're describing. I'd be checking the area w/ a vet to make sure that functionally they look okay. Then I'd be switching foods right away -- and I'd prob eliminate all treats until I find the right food, then add treats back in to see if any of them cause the offending irritation and subsequent odor. |
