Neutering and teeth extraction for a small yorkie Hi All, I am new to this forum and a first time pet owner. We have a male yorkie who just turned 1 and plan to have him neuter with baby teeth extractions. We are concern with his reaction to the surgery because of his small frame (3 lb 5 oz). We plan to have blood work done prior to the surgery to make sure all is healthy with him. Your thoughts, advice, and personal experience is greatly appreciated. |
I'm sure he will do fine! Anesthesia these days is very safe in most cases. My dogs were altered at small weights and did fine. We have links in the health section about anesthesia as a sticky - you might want to check that out. |
I know how your feeling!! I have a tiny little girl who's only 3 lbs and she needed some teeth exstracted. I was SO freaked out! Buuut she did good and I'm sure your baby boy will too I would reassure your vet that's what your mostly worried about so they can keep a closer eye on him! FYI...since they are so small, it's a little bit longer for them to recoop from being put under. I'll be praying!!! |
Thank you 107barney and Manatoussau2 for your reassurance. We took Wicked in for an exam and blood work today. His surgery is schedule for tomorrow. The vet said that he appeared healthy and that he should be okay. Thanks again. |
Let us know how he does! |
Update: We drooped Wicked off at 8am and picked him up at about 5pm. After we got home he was sleepy/drowsy and his legs were a wobbly. His stool was a little watery so the vet recommended bland food and to watch him for a few days. We got antibiotic for his extraction and pain medication for his wound. We're going monitor him closely for the next few days. I'm still not sure if all this is normal. I've read some people had their dog neuter and all is normal as soon as they got home. This wasn't the case for us. |

 Also keep in mind that the pain meds will make him sleepy too. :) How is he feeling this morning? |
Loose stool after meds and IV fluids is common. I'm sure he will feel alot better in the next day or two. |
I was up most of the night last night because he was not use to the e-collar and could not find a comfortable position to sleep in. This morning his walking was normal still a little off because of the collar. He's eating good but is not drinking the water from the bowl. I have to put water in my palm and he would lick from there. Thanks for all the concerns. I've never experienced this and am probably overreacting to everything. :-) |
Aw, poor baby! Your not overreacting....I was the same. It does take a couple days for these guys to get back to them ol self. Your a good mom 😊 Keep us updated |

Tomorrow will be a week since the surgery and I just want to update everyone with Wicked's status. He is recovering beautifully and is back to his normal self. He is drinking and eating regularly though we are trying to ween him back to kibbles. (He was on a rice, eggs, chicken diet). Thank you all for your concern and support through my slightly mental breakdown. |
