5 Month Old Yorkie with High Bile Acid Tests Good morning everyone, I have an almost 6 month Yorkie named Roxy who when we went to get her spayed they said they couldn't perform the surgery as her blood test, specifically liver test, came back high. They sent out more blood for bile acid test and it still came back high. They believed a shunt. We went for a second opinion and those test came back high also. Today she is having an ultrasound to see if there is an obvious shunt. Still waiting for results. Roxy is gaining weight, extremely active and perfect. She doesn't stare at walls after she eats etc. They said if the u/s doesn't show a shunt, we can move forward with the spaying and at the time, take a piece of the liver to biopsy. Has anyone had this happen?? What was your experience?? Thanks!:) |
I have not had any experience with this but wanted to bump hoping others will respond. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I do not have personal experience with this and only know what I have read. I'm sure people with experience will respond. Glad you did the pre-op bloodwork and caught the problem. Also glad that you are doing additional testing. I know from member LadyJane's experience that a dog can go years without exhibiting any outward signs of a liver shunt. The high BATs could also indicate a different liver problem, like MVD which is now called PVH. Here is a thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...tobias-ut.html Sending positive thoughts for good news from the ultrasound. Keep us updated. I should add, these are all problems that have a very high treatment success rate. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Sorry to hear Roxy's test are indicating a liver problem. I went through the exact same thing with Tiki, finding abnormal liver values upon a pre-spay blood test at 7 months. Ultrasound does not always show shunts, unfortunately. I ended up waiting and retesting after her first heat, , and they went ahead cautiously with the spay after 1 yr old. It was felt that she likely had MVD, however I opted not to do a liver biopsy during spay, per my vets advice, because it involves a much longer incision and longer anesthesia time (which is hard for a challenged liver to process) and additional chance of infection. We decided instead to assume she had MVD and manage with diet and supplements. I am happy to say that Tiki just turned 6 and is doing just fine. She does well on any moderate to low protein food, and only gets sick when somebody gives her a fatty snack, which her liver cannot process. The link Maximo posted is very good, and the brochure is a great overview of liver disorders: https://vetmed.tennessee.edu/vmc/Dow...NAL-201304.pdf Good luck and keep us posted. |
Roxy Hi, Still waiting for more news, but the feedback so far from ultrasound is that liver is smaller than it should be..I'm waiting for the details from her daddy..he preliminary info was limited....( I think I understand more because I read up on it..) but he mentioned surgery to re-direct blood flow, which to me seems like a shunt. Still unsure..AND VERY WORRIED! |
