Yorkie with liver shunt! My sister gave me a Yorkie Terrier. He's now 8 months old. Her vet in Kentucky said all the blood test and symptoms led her to believe he has liver shunt. He takes a 1\2 pill and liquid med every day at 8am and 8pm. He gets water to drink and special dog food from the vet. He gets nothing else & it breaks my heart! Is there any organizations that help with cost of xray or surgery if he's lucky and surgery will fix this problem? I'm on disability and can't afford all these expensive xrays or possible surgery. Also wanted to know if they can remove liver shunt can he then have treats, milkbones or something other then water and that special food? |
I can't help you with information on financing the surgery, but here is information about liver shunt, dietary treatment, and surgery from the University of Tennessee, the premier institute for research and treatment of liver shunts: Portosystemic Shunts FAQ http://www.vet.utk.edu/clinical/sacs...2013-09-26.pdf |
Here is a link to a list of organizations that help with vetting costs: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...vet-bills.html Good luck! |

Above is the link for information on help with vet bills. If he has an extrahepatic shunt it can usually be fixed with surgery. But I have to ask, if you knew you were adopting/accepting a dog with liver issues, and had no funds to cover his medical care, why then adopt? |
Liver shunt does require surgery I believe the University of Tennessee is the best place for info on that, they specialize in it The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine - Liver Shunt Research I recommend joining this group https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/...D_Support/info |
