Soaking or Adding Water to Kibble Do you soak/add water in kibble ? I have recently started soaking my dogs & cats kibble in water . Of course in addition to the water in the kibble they have fresh clean bowls of water everyday .. I found this chart on suggested water intake . Does this look accurate ? Water Requirement Dogs |
I did it before when I fed blue buffalo and it really spoiled my dog because she wouldn't eat it dry. I think there is a better flavor and aroma for them that way, though. You can also try homemade chicken broth. :) |
Yeah , my dogs do not care . They are not picky at all . Would eat anything . I just feel better soaking their kibble in water .. I would not do chicken broth though .. |

I think it's okay then, many bags of dry food say you can soak. It's supposed to release the aroma/flavor. |

Well I did do some research and it said the food should not be soaked any longer than 10 or 15 minutes . They really seem to like it much better that way and they get a little extra water. |
Because there is no moisture in kibble they drink so much, so there is no harm in soaking your kibble to give them that extra moisture. With my boys eating raw they definitely do not drink water like my friends kibble fed dogs or the way Teegy used to as that food is loaded with moisture that their bodies can absorb. So do it I say |

I've always put water into his kibble. I don't soak it or anything but I add it in there. I do kibble, a dab of canned, water and then mix. |

Britster.. Do you think it would be okay to refrigerate any uneaten portion? I know it's okay to refrigerate the opened wet food, but not sure how it would be with the kibble mixed in. |
I add enough warm water to cover Teddy's kibble. He drinks plenty throughout the day so I'm not so worried about his hydration but I feel like soaking the kibble or feeding it combined with water makes such a dry form of food easier to digest. With Toki, I add water even to her canned food so that it's almost soupy to promote better urinary tract health. She hasn't had any urinary crystals/bladder stones over the past year (which is always a concern with her) since I started doing this and I think feeding her canned food and adding water to it has contributed to preventing them (maybe...). I definitely soak any amount of kibble she eats and mix it with canned. She also doesn't drink a lot of water like Teddy so I feel better giving her extra moisture with her meals just to keep her adequately hydrated. My parents' beagle is finicky and definitely wouldn't touch soaked kibble and also doesn't like canned dog food mixed in...she's a picky one! |
