Worried about spaying my puppy Hi, I have a beautiful little Yorkie-Maltese mix puppy. She is 6 months old, I am worried about having her spayed because she is so tiny, we weighed her two weeks ago and she was a pound and a half. Our vet says she should be spayed before her first heat but to wait another month or two due to her size. Is it more risky to do this kind of surgery on such a small dog? |
My vet says yes. My pebbles is 7 months and only 2 pounds 1 ounce. I am going to get her weighed again at 7 1/2 months and hopefully she's gotten closer to 3 pounds by then....My vet estimated she won't have first heat to about 8 months old so here's hoping |
don't be in such a rush to get her spayed. My friend can't spay her's because she's not big enough that the vets will put her under. Buy her a pair of knickers and keep her inside and never off leash Don't Make This Mistake When Scheduling Your Dog's Neutering Procedure |

I will have her spayed at 8 months. I will be on pins and needles hoping it all goes well. |
The pup we're adopting is scheduled to get spayed tomorrow. She's just over 2 lbs (2.2 last they checked) and is extremely high risk... not sure how she'll make it through but they insisted on doing it now, before releasing her to us. They say they spay tiny dogs all the time, but would never put a dog under anesthesia if she's under 2 lbs. I'd wait if I were you, there's no rush... why take the chance?! I'll be saying a prayer (or a dozen) for my little girl... very nervous about how it goes tomorrow... so I understand how you feel. |
Hi There, My sweet girl, Evie, was spayed when she was 8.5 months old. She is very small, also. On the day she was spayed, she weighed 2 pounds 7 ounces. I was very worried about her being sedated as well, but wanted to have her spayed before her first heat and my vet felt comfortable with doing the procedure. She did fine. They also removed 6 of her baby teeth. I hope everything goes okay for your girl! |
Ok I was wondering how your pup did u adopted from shelter. Still afraid.... |

Hi Lucky70, Not sure if your question was directed to me or one of the other posters. If so, we did not adopt our girl, Evie, from a shelter. We bought her from a lady who owns Evie's momma and daddy. Have you talked to your vet to make sure they have experience spaying dogs that are this tiny? I know there are risks with every procedure on every size dog, but it may help calm your fears if you can get some more information on what your vet is comfortable/experienced with. Please keep us updated! |
It was for Zaya but any response is appreciated. It is quite nerve racking. Wish there was a sure way you would know the age when the pups go into heat and not just 6 months- 1 year |
