help i may be overfeeding my dog So I have only had my doggie for 9 weeks and she has had a lot of stomach issues. She has thrown up and has had jelly diarrhea more than once in the past weeks. Ive been to the vet for her tummy issues but someone said to me today, I may be feeding her too much. I feed her a 13 oz can of food a day, she is 10 years old and 9.6 pounds --- please help -- how much wet food can I give her a day? |
What food are you feeding? If she's 10 she may need a food that's gentle on her stomach. What does your vet say? |
My vet changed her food to I/D low fat this week (prescription food) -- I was told by some friends today that I may be overfeeding so I will tell him tomorrow when I speak to him but I was wondering how much other people feed their Yorkie per day. thanks |
It's possible that you're stressing her system by feeding too much. At her weight/age, she needs somewhere around 6oz per day if feeding canned. Was a fecal test done for giardia and other pests? Did this start when you changed something in her diet, like food or treats? How long has it been going on? Did you do blood work at the vet's? |
Guinness is an active 8 y/o with IBD. We use a kitchen scale to weigh his food and he gets 2oz. of can plus supplements 3X's per day. We first followed what was recommended- 9.75 oz. per day but he was gaining weight... not good for his LP. It took time and some note taking to finally figure out what was best for him. |

What were you feeding her before, your dog should be eating 10% of their body weight a day as a puppy. Don't get them stuck on that prescription crap so young. You can correct this on your own. Try feeding smaller amounts more often throughout the day, if you can source it, get some slippery elm bark powder and a good probiotic and sprinkle on your dogs food. Go back to your original food and try to remedy it. |
Thank you for your feedback. It winds up she was sick again even after I brought her food intake down :( Teegy -- I agree, I am trying to correct on my own now -- I agree, in retrospect the Z/D I think is what caused all of the blood, black stool and throwing up in the first place but I can never be sure. Right now I am feeding her rice, chic and/or salmon and trying to bring her back to her original food when I got her so I put some of this in the rice and chicken and hopefuly by next week she will be back on it. |

What is her history? Was she rehomed to you or a retired breeding dog? |
