Dragging his bum Bentley is 16 weeks old . Lately we've noticed that he's been dragging his bum along the floor, usually preceding him pooping. We brought him in for his rabies vaccine on Thursday and I mentioned it to the vet. She checked him out to see if he had any impacted glands, and thankfully he didn't. She said that this is an uncommon activity for puppies his age, but to keep an eye on it. She didn't notice anything in his examination, so as far as we know he's a happy, healthy puppy. I saw him doing this again this morning when he went outside, so obviously I'm concerned. Any idea why he might be doing this? I know we've had some issues with him pooping in the past, where he's eaten strands of my wife's hair (it's very long and I find strands all over the house) and he have to remove the poop from his bum, but we haven't had to do that recently (past week to week and a half). That's the only thing that I can think of |

It might be that his anal glands need to be checked |
Does he need a de-worming maybe? Otherwise, I'd think he was trying to empty his anal glands. Does his bottom look irritated at all? If yes, I'd put some diaper rash cream or hydrocoritsone on it to decrease inflammation. Did you change foods or anything bc that can irritate the GI. |
So the vet has, for now, ruled out issues with his anal glands. His bum looks okay, no redness or anything. We haven't changed his food since we got him Now he doesn't do this all the time. I might catch him doing it once or twice a day. He did it at the vet so she checked him out then and couldn't find anything |
Did they do a fecal sample to rule out parasites? |
They did a fecal sample when we first got him, but not since then. I'll remember that if he keeps doing this |
My poor Cavalier did this a lot, and I kept dragging him off to the vet--only for them to find no problems. Once I started paying close attention to when he did this, I finally realized he only did this right after pooing. He's 6 and still drags his bum right after he goes--it's like his way of wiping away any poo before he comes in the house. Oddly enough, our Yorkie had her anal glands surgically removed when she turned 1 because she was unable to empty them herself. She never scooted though, she would just keep turning around and looking at her backend and trying to lick there--obviously distressed. No problems with her since the surgery except for the fact that she gets scared when she poos and takes off running for me, sometimes taking off before finishing. :rolleyes: |
did your vet check for worms? you can add diatomaceous earth to the food or ground pumpkin seeds for a week and see if that helps. Keep an eye on the poop. He doesn't have a wee hair tickling his arse by any chance, you just never know |
