doggie depression? Has anyone had or treated a yorkie with depression? Seriously! My 6.5lb dog has DOUBLED in size since I had my son 2 years ago. The dog now weighs over 13lbs. It's not because my son is feeding him table food.... the only reason the vet and myself can come up with is depression. His whole personality has changed. I've tried everything and he still is topping the charts. He avoids my son at all costs and lives for when my son takes a nap or is in bed. I promise he's not being neglected. Does anyone have any advice? I've switched his food to weight loss, he doesn't eat table food or treats, he gets lots of exercise chasing the squirrals and walks, and we've even made an effort for extra love and attention. I feel so bad for him... he looks like his skin is about to bust open! Any suggestions? |
:eek: :eek: :eek: We had a dude that came into rescue like this and we didn't know if he would live long enough to bring the weight off as it was killing his heart. We put him on a pumpkin diet (non spice can of pumpkin in your grocery store). Pumpkin is very high in fiber and fills them up and dogs usually really like the flavor and to this we added cut up fresh green bean (slightly steamed) with just a little bit of dry food (Nutro Senior as it had low fat). We fed him in the morning and in the evening and we took him on 2 walks a day. At first it was pretty slow as he really had trouble and you could see it was really working his heart. The only treats he got was a few baby carrots a day. We slowly watched his spirit come alive as he got special time with us and once his weight started coming down then he got some of the old puppy feelings back. We were absolutely strict about what he ate and it took about 5 months but what a changed dog. |
I would say little one was an imbalance in his metabolism. Could be cause be not being able to play which means he can not get endorphins flowing. My girl is one steamed green beans and half the regular amount of food to get her training weight gain off. Joy |
Oh No! Poor puppy. That's a huge weight gain. have you had his thyroid checked? That could be part of the problem. Keep us updated and I hope he feels better. |
So sad. Sorry to hear of his depression. My little girl got put on RD can dog food that I can only buy at the vets office. Her weight finally came down in one 1/2 month, but I tried for 8 months and I just could not get her to loose not one pound. I still struggle with her because is hungry a lot, I also give her baby carrot's in between meals or 5 kibbles of RD. I don't know anything on correcting depression, have you tried taking him to a behavior specialist or obedience classes just to spend quality time with him. |
Thanks everyone. All of his bloodwork and other tests have come back normal. The past two years we've cut back Mickey's feedings, tried W/D, R/D, and LITE (science diet foods), he's on dry only, he's smothered with attention when he's not sleeping, and he LOVES it outside. Mickey use to be a daddy's boy. He and my husband were best buddies. My husband's job changed and became more demanding, then the addition of my son... his personality (and size) have completley changed. Mickey won't allow my husband to pick him up anymore - he pees on himself when my husband comes around. It hurts my hubby's feelings - Mickey has NEVER once been abused by my husband, but he sure does act like it. It has to be depression, I just can't find a way to snap him out of it. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll talk to my vet about trying the pumpkin! I'm not sure if hubby will go for a behavior specialist - he's more of a "farm dog" type. So for now, I just love on my big boy!! |
