Help! ..my yorkie is having major food issues Hello my beloved Yorkie parents, I am a mom to a 9 year old Yorkie named Chachi. He is having some major food intolerance issues. He has been on Royal Canin- Hypoallergenic Venison and Potato dry food for about 7 years...the last month or so he has been having diarrhea and vomiting due to the food. I have had a full blood panel on him and it is all fine.. The vet put him on Duck and Potato and that was even a worse reaction. I tried giving him boiled chicken and rice for a few weeks but then he became severely constipated. I just don't know what to do. Any ideas? Your help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, right now to keep the diarrhea away he is on the liquid antibiotic meds. |
When you change diet, do so slow unless Vet says different. Many dogs, especially ones that have been on one food for years will have pooper reactions from a sudden change. Did you take samples of poop and vomit to Vet? Mucus, unusual color, foreign objects? Water intake normal, high or low? Straining |
If you & the vet think it's food intolerance, they have a test called NutriScan, developed by Dr. Dodds. Here's a thread about it: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-test-kit.html Since I've removed the offending proteins from Turbo's diet, he has stopped throwing up. That was his specialty. I got the 2 panel test for him. I'm just wondering if he has IBD or some other issues going in in his digestive tract that might need further testing. Has a specialist been considered? Hope you'll find answers soon! |
I just wanted to add that feeding a home cooked meal is excellent, but it needs to be balanced. W/out the vital vitamins & minerals (whether it be from whole foods or supplements), a dog or cat can go downhill very fast, causing organ damage. |
You could also try Royal Canin Hydorlized Protien food. When all else failed for Pebbles and all of a sudden she was not doing well on the NB Sweet Potato and Venison food I talked to my vet about trying the RX food. She hasn't had any issues since. |

Has he been checked for giardia? Sometimes you need to check more than 1 fecal bc giardia tends to hide under scope. One diet you might want to try is white fish (tilapia, cod, sole etc), potatoes and green beans. This is a very hypoallergenic diet and can be done for a good while without supplementing. If you do it longer term, you'd want to supplement with some add'l nutrients like calcium etc. |
Mine was allergic to preservatives and grains. I put them on Blue buffalo grain and preservative free. No problem after that. I do not sell the product just use it and believe in it. No my senior is on the sr diet. It is sold mild you don't even have to switch gradually. You can start day one with 100% of new food and no diareahea. Petsmart will refund your money if it is not compatible to your dog. |
It sounds as if something is going on with your pup and not a food intolerance. I could be wrong, but until you have done full medical testing, I would not be jumping to the conclusion that it is the food. There is a GI panel that can be done. The test is run at Texas A&M. You might want to ask your vet about having that done. If your vet cannot get to the bottom of this, I strongly suggest an internal medicine specialist. |
Thank you all so much for the information! I have him on the liquid antibiotics meds and I'm feeding him his usual hypo- royal canin in the morning and boiled fish and sweet potatoes in the evening. No diarrhea now but I am stopping the meds today so we will see what happens. I may try to switch to a different brand of food just in case it is the Royal Canin that is now bothering him. If all else fails I will do a gastro panel and see a specialist. Hoping it wont come to that. |

don't feed the rice, cooked chicken is a great protein that is easy to digest, try adding a bit of digestive enzyme and some probiotic. Adding fibres and carbs to an upset digestive system isn't a good idea. The antibiotic is stripping his digestive system of the good flora that keeps it healthy so a probiotic will help this. What results did the blood work show that the vet did? |

Try and find a new feed that contains whole proteins, even home cooking is much better than royal canin, I'm the farthest thing from a fan of this food as I've seen it turn a healthy dog to an unhealthy dog over a year. |

:thumbup::thumbup: also ask your vet about l-glutamine it's an amino acid that's really good for healing intestinal tissue and also works to remove excess water in the system which is helpful for diarrhea prone pets |
