Zyrtec dosage for my little dog?
 
Teena (3.5 lbs.) has seasonal allergies & I've been managing them with a lot of vigilance, clothing, socks, PJs, & children's Benedryl. I know others use a 24 hour medicine & would like to hear what you use & the dosage.

I'd rather hear your experiences right now than calling my vet. I just bought some Zyrtec tabs which I'm hoping I can use.

Sorry, but you should not give Zyrtec to your pup without consulting with your vet regarding its use and the appropriate dose.

You mentioned 24 hours and I just want to add that you should never use Zyrtec D. It is definitely not to be used on dogs.

I see a vet derm and have tried Benadryl, Zyrtec, Chlor Trimetron, and Claritin....none of which worked very well. In my experience w/ allergy dogs here at YT, it seems like these OTC meds work in like 10% of cases, unforch.

If you're to the point where you're having to cover up the dog (clothes, socks etc), it really is affecting quality of life, and I'd pursue treatment until you find the solution. Beyond the OTCs, the choices are Atopica, Apoquel, Steroids, Temaril P, and allergy shots/desensitization. Read more about allergies here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

Dog allergies really do stink - they're so complicated and tough to treat, but you *will* get there eventually.

:thumbup::thumbup: I use Temeril P on my allergic pup. I tried Atopica and it did not work, but I know people who have had great success with it on their pups.

I have been to the vet for Teena's allergies but he didn't think it was serious enough to investigate much further. (Of course she was looking really good that day!) He "prescribed" Benadryl as needed & said we could also try the 24 hour things if Ben. didn't work. Teena can go many months at a time with no problems, so I've been glad she can manage without a stronger drug, but now the last 6 weeks have been quite challenging.

I'd still like to hear any success stories of dogs on the 24 hour meds.

Thank you LadyJane for mentioning the drugs which can be added to the antihistamines. I've been reading a bit & was aware of that.

Well, I have an update on Teena after 2 days of Zyrtec use. I've given her 1/4 of a 10 mg. tablet once a day. (Approved by a vet.) These have been her 2 best days in almost 2 months. She hasn't had to wear socks, hasn't worn PJs to bed, & no cone for 2 days! It's a little too early I know to say it's definitely helping....but I sure do think it is! No side effects from the Zyrtec that I can see.

Hope your little pal is feeling better. Alfie has had prescribed pireton and citerazine. He has had terrible allergies all his life (he is only 21 months) at one stage both his flanks were bald and he had many lesions from scratching, he has had pretty heavy meds to get him under control including steroids for quite a while. He sees a vet dermatologist and is now on Apoquel which has been pretty good although he still also takes pireton.

I have definitely found that allergies need specialist monitoring and care, particularly when you are not sure of the triggers like Alfie.

Poor little guys, what a rough go! How lucky for little Teena and Alfie and all these other pups with devoted mommies working so hard to help them- and I thought my seasonal allergies were bad! Good job mamas :thumbup:
