Spay questions, weeks later Lola was spayed 5 weeks ago, she still seems sore in some situations and I noticed a bump on the incision. The surgery went really well, she was mostly back to normal by the next morning and completely back to normal later that day, and she never acted like she was in pain. I had a very hard time trying to keep her calm. The incision healed really well, the vet tech commented on how nice it looked when she removed the stitches. Earlier today I noticed there's a little grey bump on her incision and around it it feels like there's a knot of scar tissue, here's a thread about it on another forum Bump on spay incision. A few people on there say their dog has it and the vet said it was scar tissue. Anyway, my main concern is her feeling sore. She still won't lay flat on her belly, she lays half on her side half on her belly. I'm not sure if it's because she still sore or if it's habit at this point. When I carry her I always carried her with her butt between my elbow and body and my hand on her chest. She won't let me carry her like that anymore, she wiggles until I move so she can put one leg on top of my arm. |
Hmmmm, strange. Poor baby...sounds like she may be sore/sensitive, like you said. Were the stitches dissolvable or did they need to be clipped out? It makes me wonder if she has some retained stitches or pokey stitch-ends that are irritating her and causing scar tissue to develop around it. If so, they may need to do a scar revision. I'd also wonder about the internal stitches, perhaps? |
The external stitches had to be cut out, I checked after the tech removed them and I'm pretty sure they all came out. So if it's a stitch issue it would have to be internal. She doesn't react if I touch the incision or the bump, she even seems to like it if I rub it gently. |

Internal sutures do look like that....usually a little bump that is a bit discolored in the middle. It is very common. |

Lola is weird when it comes to pain, sometimes I feel like she over reacts, and sometimes she under reacts. Under reactions: *shots, not the slightest bit fazed *being spayed, by the next day she was trying to run, jump, and play, she never acted like she was in pain unless she stretched her body, laid on her belly, or was carried certain ways, even then her reaction was just like "O guess I shouldn't do that" Over reactions: *having blood drawn pre-spay, she screamed the whole time *she fell off the couch while rolling around, quickly sat up and stayed very still, she wouldn't walk until my mom came home a few hours later the vet said she has very mild LP and it shouldn't have hurt her I wouldn't notice anything was wrong with her now if I didn't carry her as much as I do (I let her walk whenever possible). I think I'm going to try to get into my vet next week, or at least have him call me. |

I think it might be a reaction to the internal stitches. When they close skin there are several layers of suture and they use dissolvable stitches for the inside layer. Does the area feel warm to the touch or look like there might be fluid under the surface? A seroma could show up weeks after a surgery but usually the area is warm and more of a deep reddish/purple color. |
Thanks everyone Her skin is normal colored, not warm, and I don't feel any fluid. |
