Cosequin for Joints Our vet said Sophie has lp and I am thinking of starting her on a joint supplement. I have read about Cosequin and is this a good product to give her? She is only 7 months old and 3.7 pounds so I don't want to give her anything that can harm her. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
Some vets love it, some think it's useless. I don't think you really need a joint supplement. Just an overall good diet and lifestyle for the dog. Personally, I would pass on it if I were you. |

In both humans and dogs, the whole glucosamine/chrondrontin (sp) combo has been shown to be inconclusive for the most part. There are a few studies that show some positive results, but I think there is only 1 study in dogs that shows a positive correlation. So, you kind of have to weigh if it's worth it to give a supplement that may or may not do anything. |
Krill oil is very high in omega 3, higher than fish oil & easily absorbed by the body's cells. A study that the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association conducted in March 2010 (AVMA) showed that dogs that were given omega 3's had reduced signs of osteoarthritis. An Error Occurred Setting Your User Cookie Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—Results suggested that in dogs with chronic osteoarthritis receiving carprofen because of signs of pain, feeding a diet supplemented with fish oil omega-3 fatty acids may allow for a reduction in carprofen dosage. The ortho surgeon I use told me that any evidence that it helps is anecdotal. I personally used it and got no relief. I don't give it to any of my pups with LP. |
The research such as it is, is iffy at best, how-ever there are some reports not just reports that show some relief in some dogs, and no reports of adverse re-actions. I do use a supplement for joints as an adjunct to joint health. And I start the supplement with pups at six months old, how-ever I breed large breed dogs which have their own slightly different needs and priorities to the toy or small breeds. |
